I played in a couple of tournaments where in the beginning you can add 5000 chips for an extra $5.00 to your starting stack before the game starts. This is known as tipping the dealer. I did this option and got the addon. My question is should i always take the addon.what do other players do in this spot. Starting stack is 10,000 chips.

Always. Never purposely give your opponents an opportunity to have more chips than you do.

Don't play rebuy and addons if your not going to change your style of play to fit the tournament.

Typically in the beginning of rebuy tourneys the play is looser in the beginning in an effort to build big stacks off any 2 face cards or pairs etc.

But yeah.. I thought addons were offered at the end of the first break...?

Would be pointless to addon to a stack you can risk to lose then rebuy and addon after.. See??

He is not talking about re-buys. He is talking about bonus chips offered in live tournaments - that money is usually for dealer tips.

The tournies ive played in, ive always taken it. The only time I sometimes dont take it is in some online turbo tournies where I bascially get crippled before the break and bascially save some $.

And whether other players take it or not, that doesnt even matter. If they do take it, then you end up with a smaller stack then them. If they don't, you have a bigger stack. Almost a no brainer to always take it unless its a lot of $ or doesnt give you a lot of chips.

I dont always re-buy but I always take the add-on.

Only one time did I not take the add-on. I went to a home game and the guy running it had an add-on but said only the people who were below the starting stack could get the add-on. That really was the stupidest thing I have ever encountered at a poker game. Never went back to that home game.

The only time I don't take the addon is when it is a small % of my stack, or expensive.
If you have 40K from all the rebuying idiots, and the addon is 2500 chips for 10 bux, eh no.
Also, if i won say a 100 buck entry, I may not addon as it is probably too much of my bankroll to do so.

That said, yes 95% of the time I will rebuy at the last minute if i can, and then addon also.

It really doesnt make sense not to use the Add-ons.. Even if your a huge chip leader.. Why would you wanna give ur opponents a free amount of chips.. and addons are usually a decent amount of chips.. Just spend the $$ and take it!

In a live tourney, I always take the extra chips to keep my stack even with everyone. Online, I may add on right away or try to double up my starting stack.

+1...once you achieve an advantage over the other players, you want to maintain it, especially with options of add-ons

I always take the addon. Rebuys, sometimes but not always. If I bust, I'm out.

All the above advice is right.

I am a rare bird though. I started playing large, live, rebuy tournaments ($300r's at Commerce Casino) without rebuying or adding on 1 Unit Max, when I was relatively young in poker in order to get a big prize without spending the large amount normal play in these dictates. I always remember people saying, I can not play in that 300 without 900 in my pocket. Yeah, it takes a patient player to make it happen on 1 unit, but through the years it has stuck with me. It followed me into online poker as well, and I played the 10r (and others) frequently at PS and other sites on 1 and 2 units max and had very good success.

The structure of some rebuys forces you to make rebuys and addons no matter what your preferred style might be (ie rebuys with 1500 starting chips and 10K addon).

Also good advice is NEVER leave the game before the rebuy period is over. Sometimes I will plan on playing only one unit and just leave once I am beat. Sometimes I just don't like the bad-beat I took so even if I planned on taking a rebuy I leave. These days I take the addon more than a few years ago, but I always base it on my chip stack, what the rebuy and addon chips are worth, what it costs v the prizepool, to make my final determination.

Do the math, unless u start with some ridiculous amount of starting chips it will be in your favor to invest $5 to get 5000 more chips. When doing add ons it may be a bit more of a decision. add ons will depend on the blind and prize pool. example if blinds are at 1000-2000 a 5k add on is probably useless since it will not have a significant change in your play but a 5k add on at 200/400 gives you way more blinds and allows you to change your play significantly, especially if you are short stack. Pirze pool makes a difference as well, if you r the only one doing the addon you are now investing more money to essentially win less. But if the majority of the field adds it should be more in your favor to do so as well.

Always rebuy early, always take the add on. It's that simple. Think of the game as a "war". Think of your chips as "bullets". take the ammo kid.

ohhhhh and one more thing. You shouldn't play games were you can't afford the rebuy or add on.

yes, it should be clarified that this is for live poker...i was confused as it seems many were. i played a 200 dollar buy in tourny and i think had 10,000 starting chips and for 10 or 20 bucks i could make it 15,000. problem was i had exactly 200 on me and had to take some atm fees because with how much i am committing to it, i would be dumb not to take the add on....idk why they dont just include it and u r forced to tip the dealer. or it should be 5% extra to the buy in for 5% more chips so its more of an option

if you've got the money, take the add on :D its only gonna help you to make it furhter into the tournament.

now as for rebuys, if your running bad, cooler after cooler it might be better to just turn the computer off for a little bit.

Even if you have only 1 chip at the break, and you add on, you will still be relatively healthy (granted, still probably low on the leaderboard, as everyone else will have probably added on as well. But you will have a decent number of big blinds)

I was thinking of playing in this tourney. What is the difference between a re-buy and a re-entry?

11:00 AM - $60 Turbo No Limit Hold'em Tournament
($40+$10) 3,000 starting chips, 15 minute blind levels. $10 dealer appreciation bonus gets you additional 2,000 chips. Re-entry allowed through the first break. No Re-buys. Register before 10:30am and receive a free buffet certificate. Registration starts at 10:00am.

You have to die before you can re-buy. But in a re-buy you only have to go below the starting stack to re-buy.
