In my bar league I just qualified for a special all in or nothing tournament wher9e the winner gets a buy in to a NL limit tournament at Coushatta on the 16th (500 + 50 buy in). I wanted to be in a tournament like this cause it sounds fun, but to me it seems like it is going to have to be all luck. Does anyone have any advice for me going into this?

Is there no way you can unregister from the tournament and take some money instead? The reason why is say this is because there is no skill element involved in all-in shootouts. With these tournaments everybody's all-in on the very first hand, no matter what your cards are. If there are 100 people registered for the tournament and only first place gets entry into the end tournament, then you only have a 1% chance. However, if there are 10 people that have registered, then you have a 10% chance. All in all, you're going to need luck. A lot of it. Hope this helps.

It's fun to screw around in those sometimes, but with $500 at stake I'd agree with Mason for the most part. Then again - is it all in every time or all in OR fold? That alters things a bit.

But good luck!

I was wondering the same thing, is it just straight all in every time or can you make a choice to fold because that does alter things just a tab bit and it is a little more skill involved to know when or when not to go all in.

Depending on the blind escalation should dictate what hands to push.

10 minute blinds- pairs (9 9 or stronger), A-K, A-Q, maybe A-J if on the button

3 minute blinds- pairs (6 6 or stronger) , probably all A-9 and up

In my opinion all-in one can go only with AA or KK preflop otherwise need to be sure to see the flop. At 6-6 and 9-9 I just do not say anything even in a Hyper turbo tournament never went and nasobirali all in with those hands preflop. It makes no sense.

These tournaments are very funny, you can find them at pokerstars, but be sure that you're too lucky for playing:)

Outcome

I didn't win but it was fun and free. I did have a good strategy only going all in on pocket 10's or better unless I was big blind to left of the dealer then I was a little more flexible. But that caught up to me losing AK against pocket 9's.

Damn, that's unfortunate. Good strategy my friend, it appears as some of your followers misunderstood this tournament for an "Allin-Shootout" while in fact there was a skill element involved. For zero beans, $550 sounds good to me. Sad it had to be a flip at the bottom of your range.

Sounds like they just wasted $500 on a guy who used up all his luck to win the seat. Should have just took your names down and spun a wheel to save time.
