Hi,

Just new to the forum, but I have a scenario to run by you guys that lead to a heated debate on a game of poker that me and my friends host weekly round his house.

Non of the below I feel make much difference but to just set the scene a little.

Starting Stack : 15,000 chips

Blinds were 600 - 1200

Preflop player A raises as big blind from 1200 to 2400
Player B called the raise after calling the blind.
Everyone else folds.

After the flop is dealt Player A checks, Player B looks to consider pushing all in. After betting 1200, Player A "counts" Player B's chips, and makes a 7200 chip bet.

Player B thinks that this covers his chips, announces a Call and places all of his chips in the middle.

The turn and river are then shown and Player A wins.

After counting the chips it turns out Player B actually had 7300 chips left.

The heated discussion then went on that Player B should just give Player A the extra 100 chips as he never got chance to thereafter raise. The argument was that:

1. If player A wanted him all in then he should have either pushed himself, or went way over the top.
2. To give player A the 100 extra chips is based around a hypothetical bet.
3. Its a friendly game, some times people make mistakes.

The argument ended up going on for some time and never really got resolved. Now I understand that things may be different in a casino or legit tournament, but with this just been a weekly game round a mates house every week (buy in is £5 - so we're not exactly talking money of any mass).

Does anyone have any opinions on this?

Cheers
Ben

I play with my friends a lot so I am more inclined towards calling it an honest man's mistake :) If the argument was really that long, you should consider looking into stacks and bets next time, verifying the amounts before showing cards :)

There is no sense in the friend that lost in creating an issue over 1/12 of a BB that they could have kept. A comeback from 1/12 of a BB is pretty ludicrous. Since B pushed all chips in on the call, they clearly assumed they were all in and should just say "My mistake--I should have raised since I wasn't covered, but you win it all."

I think with my friends I’d have let him keep the extra 100 to see how long he could survive - maybe put a bounty on their head for fun!

It seems he had the intention to risk all of his chips on that hand, and when chips enter the pot they are in action so he should not get his 100 back. He could of counted his chips before he put them into the middle and then he would of known to keep his 100 but the moment he put them into the middle the chips were fair game.

You guys are playing a friendly home game so if you really wanted to you could give him a break, but normally he would of been out of luck.

Once a player puts his chips in the middle then those chips are in play. And like someone already said, it's a fraction of a single big blind, the guy who lost must have been hurting to want that hundo chip back lol. If it were me or anyone I know who plays poker we wouldn't even want a single 100 chip back

if the chips are in the center of the table, they no longer belongs to whoever threw it, now you have to consquistalas ... no matter how.

Once the chips are in the center of the table they no longer belong to whoever bet them but to whoever wins the hand, for future opportunities and to avoid discussions it is better to make sure of how many chips you really have before putting them in the center of the table.

Once the chips are in they are in. What puzzled me was why did they bother to count the chips in the middle?
