All-in with AK in the first hand

In the first hand of a tournament the player before me went all in and I called. They had AJ and I had AK suited. As I later thought about it, maybe it was a bad decision. The person could have had AA, KK or any pair. I'm was wondering what others would have done in the same situation.

I doubled up but I'm not sure if this is something that I should have done. I never re-buy into a tournament so it as a do or die situation.

Anyone have any comments or advice?

Unless it's a hyper turbo tourney, u cannot risk all your stack with AK at the beginning when the blinds are small. On long run, it won't be a winning play. AK is always overrated imo.

Generally in a serious tournament it's fold, but at freeroll i would gladly gamble with.

OK so if this is a fold, which is understandable, what cards do you call with?

Well my decision would've been base on a whole set of diff variables, such as, type of touny(freeroll or buyin and the level of buyin), type of player im up against(if hes loose, passive etc), along with his position (whether he is in or out of position), my position at the table(whether im in or out of position) etc etc... Based on the evaluation of the situation then i would make my decision.

AK is a very strong hand. I do not agree that it is overvalued. You should to be afraid of only two hands AA/KK.. Freeroll- instant call.. Bay-in tournaments- depends on the position and my feeling.

This is my favorite hand, but unfortunately it does not always win, like AA, KK. I would fold in this situation. Good luck! :)

AK is to strong to fold at a Freeroll. At Buy-In-Tournaments only call when it is a Hyper Turbo.

At the beginning of the tournament with buy-in, I would not have done so. AK is a strong hand, but not strong enough for all-in.

i think ak is a very good hand but the risk you took is not worth! you maybe win the hand but it was only for 2x starting stack! most of the times you will find AA-KK there! so easy fold for me!

Depends on the type of tourney - I agree. If it is a turbo tourney you have to take risks to double up quick then I think it's not bad to call with AK. (Also depends on if there are rebuys) If is is first day of the world series of poker, I wouldn't want to be doing that unless you have AA

Why would you play a re-buy without the intention of re-buying?

You put yourself at a disadvantage playing it like a freezeout while everyone is playing it like a re-buy.

Just play a freezeout.

I've never played a freezeout to be honest I've never heard of it before. I'll check it out today.

Thank you

in a freeroll it is good call with AKs but at larger stake and deep stacks it would be fold for me...even if the opponent deuces I would not risk my stack on a coin flip on the very first hand of the tournament

Depends on style of play/players involved.
calling hands 9s or better or only AA.
Also depends on site and way flops appear.

A freezeout is an MTT with no re-buy or re-entry. Once you're out, you're out.

I have mucked many strong hands like that early in a tournament no matter if it is a freeroll or with a buy in,even AA. Especially with more than one players in the same hand because I am so deep and simply I don't want to risk my entire tournament life in a flip. Be patient in the beginning no need for confrontations with pure gamblers.

Can't add anything that hasn't already been said. FR, yes. Buy-in, no. I will say that I sort of expect to lose in a FR when I call early in a tournament with AK. Seems to be a trap hand for yours truly.

I think it's a bad move, those blindfolded hands may result as early going home
