Hello Chatters!
I just realized a problem I have, after I managed not to tilt.
I get intimidated. I mean after a couple of unlucky hands, especially after a bad beat, I play a timid game, not just tighter and more cautious, but without any confidence at all.
Last night I busted near the bubble of Event#1 of TCOOP against a 4-outter. Today I was playing a $3.30 satellite for TCOOP and I was doing well. I got pocket Kings and reraised 3x, I get shoved and call to see my opponent holding 6s. After he rivered a 6 my stack was crippled, of course I tightened my range and mucked all speculative hands. On top of that I stopped risking, bluffing stealing even calling with decent odds. I fought a lost battle, not even a desperate one like when short-stacked. I kept feeling like already beatten - "if 2-outters beat me, what can I do?"
Scared duck I was and I realized it only too late, turbos don't forgive....
I busted relatively early and thought to raise the topic.
Does this happen to you?
How do you deal with it?

Hey Psycho. Same thing happend to me yesterday in the 1# event of the TCOOP.

Had decided i was gonna play as tight and as solid as possible and i get KK around 12 hands in the tourney.(everyones super deep). I raise to 4X and the guy next to me snap shoves !!. I call, he turns over A8 off. He hit the ace on the river and i was elimiated. bye bye 27$.

I was so mad you cant imagine. 20 minutes later i forgot about it.

thats how it is man.No-one is guaranteeing you that if you play solid, your going to win.

All you can do is keep trying yyour best and hopefully(luck will be on your side.)

It is very difficult to maintain mental stability when we are losing but at the end of the day, THAT is what makes the difference between people who can win or lose in the long run.

Sorry to hear about you running bad man. Better luck in the future. :)

I sit out and go for a smoke or get a drink. A couple minutes of walking around and taking deep breaths does wonders for me.You can't let yourself be beaten mentally, if it happens your opponent will pick up on that and exploit it. better to sit out a hand or two and regain your composure

Guys, I'm not talking about bad luck here. I'm not talking about tilt either. I'm talking about not tilting on one side, playing scared on the other. Does it happen to you too?

Hi lads, I have to agree with Vhyre, take a couple of minutes, stretch your legs & breathe it out....

As daft as it sounds; personally i'll let out a little growl, or if i have the house to myself a wee roar & then get up & walk over to my window to breathe it out or have a quick smoke....

It might not give you back your confidence straight away, but it definitely helps me get that immediate rage out of my system & stops me making any rash moves on the next few hands....

Even if you sit out a few hands, better to miss a few hands and come back in the right frame of mind, than to end your tourney within the next few hands.

I thought you were talking about tilt and bad luck. I mean, you do describe how unlucky you got and how that leads to you playing scarred(tilting).

Im confused now Duck.:p:p:confused:

I mean the timid play. No rage, just fishy play. Happens to you too?

Yes Vas, I have played very similar to this, I feel like every time I going to play a hand I am going to lose.

I had no confidence what so ever, I was the same as you winning till the river and I always said before it landed hes gonna get it on the river!!!

It sucks but it does get better, it is bad luck and it puts you on a complete downer, that's why people are thinking of it as tilt.

It is tilt because you are now at a very emotional roller coaster in your poker game and its the lack of luck that has put you there, making you play your hands in a scared motion.

Hope your luck turns around for you, you are a very good player and don't you forget that.

GL mate.

Yea, ive been on that boat as well. I think that after losing a certain amount of hands (especially when you take bad beats), that kinda leeads to us sometimes not being able to cope with losing anymore, so we start playing scarred to control our losses, or because we are scared that we are going to lose more.

In essence, this is a form of tilt. Emotional distractions that do not allow us to play our A-game is just a synonym to tilt.

Sorry Vas, it looks like i ignored your 2nd post, but it just took me so long to type it out, that the conversation had already moved on...

I also often find it hard to get out of that mindset that anything than can go wrong will go wrong. Obviously if you find AA-QQ, it makes it alot easier.

I'm no pro, so take this with a pinch of salt, but if you know you are being bullied or having your blinds stolen, Shove! (With Ax,Kx,Qx)

Make your move whilst you still have enough chips to make people think twice about calling, i tend not to go for my usual 3/4x raise, because murphy's (or sod's) law says they will hit.
Hopefully they fold, but if not you've got the hope of doubling up, which should help the confidence levels.

But perhaps more importantly whether you double up or make the villain back down, hopefully it will make your blinds harder to take and once your opponents are less happy to get involved in pots with you, you can choose your own spots and the confidence will soon follow.

I know what you mean, as I have been working on that myself.
It has only been recently that I have immediately gotten back on the horse and regain my composure.
I have folded K-K in my time and with good rationale.
When I didn't get back into the game, I would fold K-K at any sign of duress. And when A-A came, I either got no action or were taken down...
I guess I now make the plays I need too kinda like automatic mode... and I still have those feelings, spider senses tingling, whatever, but l am playing.
Taking down a pot helps elevate those feelings pretty quick.
I also am taking a serious approach to my own poker development so its one of the areas I too am working on.
Chip up I say, chip up!

Hello legendary duck!

I think almost everyone have experienced this. This might also happen after you've been a lucky guy and beaten somebodys aces with your kings, or after a long series of coolers catch you.
Frankly, I think everything is individual how to deal with it.
For me it works with a long break. Just do some things to raise confidence.
Play video games (make sure u win), cuddle with pets or gf, watch rounders etc.
When you feel mentally ready, just sit down and everything will go smoothly.
GL legend, and keep updating your freeroll diaries ;)

Cheers

I second to watch rounders, love that movie. It makes me more motivated to play some poker after watching it :)

Im sure it happens to a lot of people. When you get a bad bead, just do your best to not go on a tilt and PRAY for a good hand. If you get lets say 10k chips taken away from you and you get an Aces the next hand, when you go all in people usually think that you are on a tilt and are more likely to pay you. You need to play aggressive before the bubble, just like you did. Youre playing bigger tournaments than the people that are asking questions here usually do, so Im sure you already know that sitting back and waiting to get in the money can get you a few cents but it will never win you a top place. I find it better to play aggressive and dont get the last prize, than to sit back and get eaten up by the blinds. You just had some bad luck, theres no need to change the way you play the game. Of course when you get beaten so bad that your chips force you to play a push or fold game, you should. But other than that.. meh, I dont know what else to tell ya. It just happens. You need to take chances. When you went all-in pre-flop Im sure you realised at some point that you can have those chips taken away from you. Even with an Aces its not a guaranteed win. Its a gamble. so when you put your chips on the table its not yours anymore. Maybe next time when you take such risk ask yourself what can you do with the remaining chips if you get beaten. If you cant risk that amount, then fold it.
