Hi, i had seen tons of books by poker players and others on how to play the game effectively and win but im more interetested in how to alter your play for tounrneys and good strategies to win big tourney consisting of 1000s of players.

Also how to bluff and ways not to show weakness when bluffing

my game play is 80% on cards and with poker u need to create your own luck when the cards are not coming ..so i want to learn how to bluff well...how to bet/raise when im bluffing ..especially when i sense weakness from other players ...

so a book or blog which has concise tips/strategies on playing tourneys and especially how to bluf well when playing high stakes..
thanks

So, one thing to consider is your internet and lifestyle such that you will never have blips or interruption? If no, stick to cash games.

If yes, then understand that tournaments are not about getting good cards and playing them well; no no no, they are about playing position and progressing slowly like a vulture scavenging mistake after mistake letting people kill each other off.

You don't want to be the aggro guy who knocks people out, you want to be the coward who plays very few hands through to the end but when you do, you have blatant advantage.

Your aim is to get to second place, ignore the idea of 'winning' play with mentality that others must kill each other off and you will profit as a tournament player.

Personally, I play ABC poker and have a decent win rate. My primary focus is playing the hand ranges out there correctly based on position. But recently have started to experiment more with bluffs during the late stages of tourney play. It's really situational and shouldn't be overused in the beginning IMHO. Consider the fact that table image also counts towards a lot in your ability to bluff or get called down with bottom pair on the board.

Hey! Nice thread you have sterted!
As a newly joined poker community person I discovered following tips while playing big freeroll tourneys:
-there allways will be such all in shovers with 72 off, so try to adapt and ignore their stupidity
-your task is to live as long as possible in the tourney in order to get intho the money
-try to follow positional game but still remmember the 1st point
-try to win more and loose less (i.g. when you have nuts try to suck out of ur opponent as much as possiblle but when u didn't hit the flop just fold and don't loose too much)
-study ur opponents

That's all up untill this very moment, if you have something to add, pls do it!:)

I see some people checking the nuts on the river why:confused: bet at least 3/4 of the pot. Never slow play monster hands unless your goal is a min cash. The way to pull of a bluff on the river is to act fast and make a pot sized bet.

I think 80% is too much to play and would be easy adjusting to your game and take profit against you just because you are against 8 players and you play virtually all the hands with some patience one of them will break you

If you are going to play tournaments with big fields you are going to need some luck. In a tourn with over 1500 players, you are going to be all-in in classic situations. Pocket pair versus 2 over cards. You will need to win some big races here, or you can't win. I think playing smaller fields is better.

that is some really good advice. i understand that its better not to play aggresively and let others wipe themselves out and only play top hands... only thing which eventually becomes a problem is that wheb blinds keep going up and you are not getting good cards or your good hands are not hitting. then what do u do? bluff or wait gor blinds to finish u

like i said below, if u are not getting good cards and are going to be blinded out, then what do u do ? wait for your last hand to get something good or bluf when u feel weakness in other players?

Power Hold'em Strategy by Daniel Negreanu. Gives a hole new perspective on how to be effective without giving that much importance to your cards. This book introduces the average player to the small ball strategy which is genius and this strategy responds exactly to what you are actually asking.

Look into starting hand ranges and what to play in certain positions depending on your stack. Early on you can play loose but by the middle try and tighten your range if your less than 30BB

learn the ropes on small field say up to 90.Winning big tourneys luck will be needed a lot more often because the middle and late middle stage takes a lot longer, and will force you to shove all-in from time to time. You will lose against weaker hands.. you have to be able to take those punches :)

One of the most popular books that was written by popular player Mike Caro. The content of this book does not contain any advice on the implementation of a bluff, but directs the attention of readers, the need to recognize the bluff of opponents.

Once you get into the later stages of MTTs a lot of variance is involved. Players are shoving with pocket pairs and need to hold in order to double up which usually means winning a flip. If you aren’t in strong position (top20) after making the money you will have to try and luck out a lot of the time on all ins preflop
