Deep in tourney.
Blinds 600/1200 120 ante.
I on bb with 21 bigs stack villian on sb with same like stack.
Action folds to sb on villian who limps.
I picked up a5 suited.
Villian always limped with weak hands.
So i tried to steal the pot.
He called with 33.
Boars runs out and 3's hold.
What do you think?

Your hand was only partially explained, for some reason you choose not to describe how you tried to steal the blinds.
Did you shove allin preflop?
Too little description for anyone to give an honest reply.

What do you take by 3's hold?

This seems like the story....and I don't like it.

The impressive thing is that he was flipping with 2 overs.

Good luck !

I posted a reply but it didn't show up - it was kind of disorganized though. So let's try this....

"Villian always limped with weak hands. So i tried to steal the pot."

If the villain is weak, you're not stealing - you're betting for value. A5 is likely ahead most of the time and you have position, so a raise most of the time here is good, I think.

I don't like going all in though - specifically because you give up position and will only be called by something that beats you or is a close coin flip. That seems great if you're short in a cash game, but for a tournament, it's kind of bad unless you're much shorter than 21 BBs.

I would mostly raise to about 3k here, offering about 2.5:1 odds to villain. Post flop I would bet most flops that don't hit me with about 4k and be done with the hand if there is any interest shown or if I don't improve. I want to win the pot or have at least 15bb left if I lose.

Hope this makes sense!

Cheers,
Brandon

I guess you could taken a free flop with his limp or try to raise 3bb instead of all in. He would probably shove on your raise if you did 3bb. So you might be all in either way.

A5s is a shoving hand in this situation but only when you're short stacked, like 10 bigs or less. You expected villain to fold so you shoved 21 bigs just to steal the blinds and antes which really isn't worth it. A 2-3x raise is much better because it would have got the same job done with far less risk to you. Villain would've still called with his 33 but then you have plenty of chips and can fold afterwards to any action if you miss and you still have a playable stack. Live and learn I guess :)

I think a raise in position to the limp with any Ax is the right play - he calls with the 3s and then if you cbet he has a decision to make when he misses the flop.

You could also take the free flop and bet it on one or two streets and see what happens there. Betting before and after the flop will put the 3s in tough spots vs just letting the 3s make a decision to flip and let the board come as it may.

No reason to shove just to pick the pot up with A5, every now and then your sb limper is going to pick up a hand and some players just will not fold a pair. Good luck to you and your game

You should raise pre flop and go all in on the flop

Lets see you pick A5 suited rigth? How could you tell the Villain holds 33 ?
So In a future game, If you only know your hand A5 suited, it will depend on the Flop, turn, river.
As a rule unless you hit the flush draw or 5,5; A5 that hand is considered a weak hand. I will not pat any rise If none of the options I mentioned will show up. :call2:

I would raise just flat call and it he checks to you triple barrel a quarter pot. 8 bb or less a would shove. He has enough equity no matter what against that hand. You'll find better spots with 20 bb. And there's a good chance he will fold his underpair to 3 barrels

This is another example of why "shoving" is generally bad poker. There was no reason to shove. You should have just seen a flop. With no set and overcards out there it wouldn't be too tough to take the pot, or at least control the pot and not lose your stack.

Some people can't fold pocket pairs no matter how low they are. You got a good call for your hand it that you had 2 overs suited. Better luck next time.
