Hello all, new member here that's been scouting message boards every now and then for a few years. I play poker on the side, and have played in about ~5-6 poker tournaments at an actual casino in my life time. I usually play home games, and do average. I have a poker background with a little studying for about 10 years (nothing serious though). However, my last 3 poker tournaments have been within a 2 month time frame. With about ~60-70 players for each one. I made it to the final table all 3 times, and cashed twice. I recently moved into an area where this particular casino is about 20 mins away. They have daily tournaments where the buy in is < $100 with a 40bb-50bb-80bb-100bb structure all with 20 minute intervals. But I usually play in 80bb-100b tournaments. I plan on going to one this Friday that's an 80BB $40 buy-in w/ no rebuy or add-ons.

Starting Chip Stack = 4000.
1 25/50
2 50/10
3 100/200
4 200/400
5 300/600
6 400/800 & 100 ante
etc.

I've noticed that the regulars are TAG w/ not many 3 betting going on. I always find myself 3 betting the most with a few others. I play A-B-C poker for the most part, but I pick my spots against certain individuals. Is position poker relevant in this kind of format? I know that this format is pretty much a luck fest. But I feel like I got an edge on most of the players that go here. Any tips or advice?
Thanks!

The structure is not so good, but position is still very important. In fact, possibly more important since you'll be frequently having to make moves due to poor structure...and it's safer to make a move when somebody has already checked to you.

In general, strategy for a tournament like this will be to play tight early and then open WAAAAY up when blinds get big relative to stack size. You'll need to take and win some flips. Can't be laying down AK preflop unless you have a dead read that you are facing KK or AA.

The deeper stacked you are, the bigger hands you need to hold to go all in. With shallower stacks, you pretty much have to go all the way with top pair or an overpair. With even shallower stacks 2nd pair might be good enough.

Poker is a position game, which I'm sure you know. If they are TAG then there are definitely exploitable spots, but these spots can be hard to find in live plays, especially given player dynamic. I know that are my local casino, everyone is LAG, so three betting is essentially pointless and success is a craps shoot until late in the tournament. I think ABC poker is the way to go, but I think you have it right with the occasional creative play, especially if you have the stack size to make a move.
