I'm an amateur player needing some advice. I've heard people tell me I shouldn't play at tables with 6 or less ppl at then bc I'm a fairly conservative player and that I should play at the tables with 8/9 players.

Is there truth to this statement that conservative players do better at full tables and that aggressive players do better with less?

Actually yes, due to the fact that the blinds come round so much more often in 6max than full ring, the game plays much more aggressively and you cant afford to simply sit and wait for hands. You have to loosen up your game and get more aggressive than some people are comfortable with. For a conservative player full ring is definitely the way to start, at least until you have more experience in post flop situations, with hand reading and at taking the lead/playing more aggresively.

on 6 max table you should play wider range of hands and will have more difficult decissions. so for newbie it is more sense to start from 8-9 max tables

Definitely.

Conservative adapts well at full and would struggle at short handed.

Conservative has less range which is good at full table and bad for short table.

With 6 players is more likely that no one has the good hand but the blinds seems faster cuz there are only 6 players. And also if you have good card there is bigger chance not to get called on raise

As an amateur conservative player I play mostly ( like 85%) 9 handed because my play style is just too slow for 6 max.

9 or 6 is simply a preference but conservative translates directly to passive which will be exploited at any table with any limit where a more experienced player notices the passiveness.

There are many resources to learn to take advantage of playing a more aggressive game without widening your hand selection much.

Granted the math says blinds come around more at a 6 max game but the math also says that your opponent wont often have the cards to defend a blind steal very often.

yes but slowly integrate some 6 handed tourney play - it'll help you round out your overall game a little

but yeah definitely 90%+ of all games should be on 9 players for you

I only play double your money games with 8 persons. With 6 persons the table is to aggresive for me. I am to scared to call re-raise 3bb.

I'm one for pushing you to explore short table play. This being the tournament forum, if you expect to do better than top 7 you'll need to play a short table.

Start by treating it as a full table with the all the UTG,(+1,+2) removed. Your opening range for MP hands moves up. Calling range too. That UTG raise shouldn't cause quite the same fear/respect as it would in a full ring game.

Obviously in a tournament there are other considerations added to the mix. (Stack sizes for one) but this may give you a fighting chance.

Very short (2-3 players) play is a whole different ball game. Let's just say the aggression ramps up exponentially.

I think there are advantages to both. 9 handed, you can play the waiting game a bit more, but in 6 handed, there are 3 fewer players who may have better hands when you get a good starting hand, so you can play more aggressively yourself. It depends on your temperament and how you prefer to play.....fun or money?

I agree with most of the opinions that beginners should start on a full ring table, however, you cant ever be a great player without learning to play short handed and learning the math. mixing in a 6 max game at low stakes every now and then is good practice

I prefer to play for 6 max tables, you can play more aggressive, a higher chance of the worst hands to knock opponents. Personally, my opinion)

Given you are more comfortable playing conservatively, I would start with 9-handed tables. The blinds come around less often, so you can wait for premium/strong hands. However, I would encourage you to work on your aggression level a bit and then try 6-handed tables. The main difference in a 6-max is that you need to open up your range a bit (losing 3 chairs means losing all the early position seats). Chances also go up that your opponents will have premium hands less often. There are some great books out on microstakes play as well as some videos about micro play available at pokerstars. You will find a lot of amateur players at the micro levels, but improving your game can only help. GL!

Yeah its true.

If you are new to Hold Em, then the more seats at the table, the more learning/info you are going to receive, which is good for your game.

I still prefer 9 seated tables in most tourneys. Particularly MTTs with huge fields.

Question certainly interesting. There are pros and cons with the game 6-9. When 6 players at the table means the deck has no more cards and if you draw the more chances to write at the same time it's a minus if you draw at your opponent.

It's true, but if you like action, 6 ppl is for you... But this isn't only about action, so 9 ppl is for amateur player better way to increase his bankroll...

Are we talking cash tables ? After a while in a STT it will be a 6 player for at least some time...

in 6max you get the blinds 1/3rd of the time, in full ring its 1/5th or 2/9ths...so they tighter you play the more the blinds will eat you up in 6max

but table selection can make up for the frequency of blinds, so you really want to fish in the ponds with fish in them
