Hey guys, so 3 years ago I stopped playing tournament poker and have been chasing the pipe dreams of large money in cash games. I mean granted I have never played in a tournament that cost more then $100 buy in anyways but thought I was a pretty good player so I moved to cash games only. Mostly 1/2 NL, 2/5 NL, 2/100 Spread, 6/12 Limit & 8/16 limit.

Regardless to say Ive gotten bored with playing live cash games Ive had my share of $1500-$2000 wins over the last 3 years in single sessions but always end up just playing a lot more then I should be.

Last Friday I went to a local casino with a friend to play some 2/60 spread...lol turns out they only had 7 tables in the room and all tha twas going as 2/10 spread and a $50 + $10 bounty tournament no rebuys with 31 entries so I played my 1st tournament in 3 years. I ended up finishing 3rd place (1 of the other 2 guys refused to chop of course). $186 and only got 1 bounty so it was $136 win

Total prize pool of $930 was distributed to the top 3...with the house taking a whopping $620. ($10 optional dealer not included). Now I remember why I quit playing poker tournaments, this is absolutely insane. Granted I had a lot of fun, but this just seems like a tournament that no one should ever enter and I just got extremely lucky.

exactly the point im making....if they had any good cash games I would have played them...but it would have only been out $60 which was just ended up being for fun anyways since I wouldnt have played cash. Point Im trying to make is in any other scenario this is one of those trap tournaments that casino's make a TON of money off of which kills the casual player into a trap

But look at the positive side, you cashed in your first tourney in 3 years and got a bounty also. A cash always goes in the win column in my book. I say congrats on a great game

I think you misunderstand how tournaments work.

The casino didn't take 620 of the winnings. The 620 was the bounties on the players leaving 30 going to the prize pool.

31 players x 50.00 = 1550.00 but there is a bounty....

31 players x 20.00 bounty = 620.00

1550.00 - 620 = 930.00 for the final pool...

I'm positive if you went to the poker room and checked, this would be correct.

The casino's cut is the + 10.00 (50 + 10 buyin), so the casino made 310.00 for hosting the tournament (plus liquor sales, food sales, and action they receive before/after the tournament). While I think the "vig" is high for the tournament (should be 10% ie. 50+5), its not that unreasonable.
