Is 10bb still optimal shove/fold in SNGS?

The rule has always been that when you get to 10bb you should shove/fold, however i feel that sometimes 10bb seems quite a big open shove in SNGS, especially when you are against players with smaller stacks.

However, i am not sure and would like to hear any of you opinions?

that's the whole point lol

I think you sometimes can minraise but it depends on tons of factors, plus you can definitely defend your BB by calling a minrase (instead of repushing) while having 10bb stack.

Totally agreed! You should shove against lower stacks, because most of the time they fold and if you go with you, you are still in the game

I think you should definetly consider the effective stacks at times, say you're 4 handed and the SnG pays top 3 and you're sitting with a 10BB stack and the other 3 players are around 2-8 big blinds, I think raising certain hands to call off shorter stacks and fold to say an 8 big blind stack for ICM reasons is sometimes reasonable. Generally though, I would say it is push/fold...10 big blinds and opening a pot, when we flop any sort of pair or equity, we're kind of already commited and don't leave any other room to do anything else. So unless there are some ICM factors to consider, I would say as a general rule, it should be push shove almost always.

I agree, don't push to big stacks ,try to defend you BB with against smaller stack and make agression on them

This is a very general rule! What kind of tournaments are you asking about? Regular or Turbos? Certainly there are spots that a shove is the most unexploitable move but still you must have understood the dynamics of your table. And again under some circumstances you must apply pressure to the shorter stacks or even to the similar with you stacks!

The general rule of thumb is that if you are committing more than a third of your stack with a raise or call then shove or fold instead of calling or raising.

The reasoning is pretty straight forward. Let's say the blinds are 500/1K to make it easy and you have 10K chips. You have AKs so you raise 3K chips and get 1 call. The pot is now around 8K with antes. Your opponent has lets say 30K chips and he makes a CBet of 50% pot size.

So of your remaining 7K you now have to pay 4K to stay in the hand which is more than half your remaining chips. Now you have no choice but to shove or fold. If you fold you lose 30% of your stack without even playing out the hand.

Shoving 10bbs is not always optimal, you have icm considerations and villan considerations.

Some villans will fold to a min raise, other villans will view your shove as weak, and still other villans are fit or fold and you can limp stab the flop.

And what if you have AA, against an observant reg you would probably shove, but against a recreational player you should probably limp.
