I just wonder how safely most people play their straights versus a possible flush draw.

So let's say you hit a straight on the flop. The flop has three hearts and you have no hearts in the pocket.

How carefully do you play this situation when a player pushes all in? How about when a player bets aggressively but not all-in?

I've been "screwed" a lot recently by playing such hands too aggressively. Most of the time I am going against a player who has one heart in the pocket. Sometimes the opponent has two hearts in the pocket but not that often.

Lately, I've been folding all-in bets but calling aggressive bets. I'll often find that aggressive bets will be followed by a check if a heart does not come on the turn in which case I push all my chips in (sometimes I get screwed doing this too...lol). Of course, if I am in late position and no one has bet anything, I'll be aggressive and try to steal the pot right there.

What would you do?

I think folding allins and calling an agressive bet is right move. So is a pot-sized bet in late position. But you shoud take into account stack size and the style of your opponent. And also you should remember that a completed flush is always stronger than a straight if its not straight flush.

If it is checked to me on the flop I'm never checking back. Otherwise i would told if I were shoved on and call pot sized bets. I don't know if I would call a turn shove. It's really a tough situation for me. I'm curious to hear other opinions.

Thanks for your responses.

What I've been doing lately is taking a chance with it if it is just me and one other player in the pot (i.e. push all-in). When there is more than just one other player in with me I will check it out or fold (well, sometimes if everyone is checking I'll throw a decent sized bet on the river to see what happens but then fold on re-raise all-in).

Think back to preflop betting and see if the player has raised significantly preflop. If they raise it up it is a good chance they don't hold flush cards. Min raise or call would lead me to believe they are holding the flush.

Wow, touch position. Even if you hit your straight on the turn another heart on the river and your screwed. I think I just check call to the river.
