OK Just to clarify the Question... Do you feel like you are still learning and improving ?

I have been playing for 7 months... I know I still have a lot to learn, but I do feel like yeah ! I am slowly improving...

The 'After how long' bit refers to how long you have been playing and if you still feel after a long time of playing you still are improving or you are more or less static and have found your own level and any further improvement is questionable/marginal...

In the first few months it was a steep learning curve and I went from being quite bad to average over the first few months....

Next stage was to appreciate the importance of table position and understand hand strengths and try to read opponents and exploit etc and I feel now that I have 'Instinct' at times. When I first started I was playing in an analytical/mathematical fashion... but now I sometimes just have a 'feel' of what opponents have rather than reacting entirely on flops and bet sizes etc...

But anyway, yes 7 months in and I know I am playing better and smarter and was just wondering if there's a people out there who have been playing much longer and are still learning... improving !

I know you never really stop learning in life with regards to everything, but I'd say the Elite players on TV are not really learning or improving anymore... If they are it's very marginal

7 years, and all I learn is more about how badly I'm in the dark.

Poker is a game that you never know everything and is constantly evolving. They make few months I dedicate a few hours to play and have obtained good results. But the study never stops and the more you know, the more advantages you can have over others.

I been playing poker for 13 years, but only a year or so ago have I started to really learn the game. And it seems that everyday I learn something new about the game and more important I learn about myself as a player. Those bad habits of long ago have been hard to break. But if I want to be a winning player, I have to break them.

I really like this question. I think it points out that good poker players are ALWAYS learning.

I disagree only with your first point that elite players don't really keep learning. I think my first statement applies to all players, including the elite. This is a game that constantly evolves and you have to learn and observe to stay on top of it.

This is one of the big reasons that I love this game. There is always more to learn!

Hiya Tosh

I have only been playing for about 6 years but have found my learning cycle goes up and down. That is probably more about my own learning style, and whether I can be bothered or not.

I will say that since I've been on Cc I have found that through reading some posts/ threads I have picked up things that I thought I knew, or forgot I knew. This forum is the best Poker forum there is and no doubt we will all continue to learn while we are part of it.........gl Marc :D:D:D

I feel like I am always learning. There are so many ways to play different people in different situations. Its one of the reasons I like the forum. You get different perspectives on how to play the same hand, and can incorporate those ideas into your own game and adjust your own style.

I had to relearn how to play multiple times over the last 12 years. After the poker boom around 2008/2009 you could just be a complete NIT (didn't know it at the time) online and win on FT and PS before they shut it down. Now everyone knows the game and is ultra aggressive so you have to learn to open up your range and read books/ watch videos online.

Sure man... even things you believe that already learned, comes again sometimes at the table. I mean, it is really important to recycle yourself and keep remembering of the most obvious things.
Some times we get so confident that we forget some basic learnings.

I have been playing poker for 30 years now!

Variety of games should always keep you learning more and thirsting for knowledge! The older I get the more I want to play and get better.

I'm learning yes, but it's like big pause, then play much, pause ...
I forget all what I have learnt during playing sessions.
It's too much calculations one needs to do during play, my head is not a computer ! ^^

learning probably isn't the right word, improving is probably a better word to use. You should always be improving, but sometimes you are not neccessarily learning anything new, you are just perfecting the things you already know in order to make the most profit in your game type.

If you are human, you can not stop learning.

Since this is a game, it is more likely that in the beginning you will be having more fun. Probably losing, but more fun.

If you can put the game in some sort of perspective, there should be few problems. For example, you go to a movie with a date. Enjoyed the movie and the company, but really you lost whatever it cost to see the movie.

You gather a group of folks for a kitchen poker game, pocket change style, you might lose that loose change but it was fun. If you lost no more than the cost of the movie, the experiences are somewhat equivalent.

Thing is you seldom think you can improve on the movie making experience by making a better movie, but you will think you can improve on the poker experience by learning more about the game.

Downside is that when you get too serious about the poker experience you forfeit the pure fun. You will have to alter your concept of fun. It will need to move toward the fun of learning like when you finally grasped that evasive math concept in high school. You achieved a state of satisfaction that released endorphin's, which you were probably unaware of. You got a high, and no drugs were required.
