Things can be tough... one thing you need to do to get better at this game is game play.

Well I have a few things around me like wife, kids which tie me down... My wifes sick but on medication and she just gives me the shts and nasty at times but sometimes its not the real her it's the drugs.

Hmmm so hard sometimes when your so hungry to be great at something and you feel like the things around you are holding you back. I have never let things hold me back in the past and willing to let everything go for a shot to be something or at least try.

I look at all these Olympians and champions what do they have in common... They all train and practice everyday and do nothing else... I think to myself that's what I really need to be doing if i'm going to have half a chance....

It's all a joke to everyone on the outside and the wife doesn't believe in me it's tough in that aspect... she'd hold me back and then be the first to slap me in the face with it.

So hmmm how far to go to get where I want... everyones got a wife and family but not everyones a champion.. but at what price..

gawd... i'm just putting this out there cause ive been thinking more and more like this ... so hungry to be something more in life.

Is the question whether you should abandon your sick wife and your children so you can perhaps earn a living playing poker?

Myself I would rather be a good father than the greatest poker player ever. I have won thousands of dollars in quite a few tournament in my day.Yes it is a wonderful feeling to win big and it can bring you joy but there will never be a greater joy in my life than what my kids have giving and continue to bring to me. There is no greater accomplishment for myself than knowing I have raised wonderful kids who are good people and are functioning and productive members of society.

Great poker player and Great father :) I would never abandon my kids ever.

But divorces happen all the time...

trekmaster that's great you feel that way.. good job :) but im sure they'd be fine with or without you... people adjust and cope but a feeling of self worth is important.

I agree. A feeling of self worth is very important. I however for myself don't think I could get that feeling of self worth knowing I gave up having my family unit to be that great poker player. It may work for someone else just not myself.

I have to agree with Trek.
I was a fairly successful account executive for Sony and gave it up to stay at home to raise my kids and this was in the 90's before it was trendy.
When I look back on that time and how far my boys have come and where they might be if they were latchkey kids it is the biggest accomplishment in my life.
I am sorry to hear about your wife and her illnesses but hopefully she will get better and maybe your biggest accomplishment will be to help her through this and help with the kids. Family is everything and the respect that you crave by being a great poker player will be limited to a very small percentage of the pop[ulation that respect and admire poker players.
There is a much larger segment that will admire you for putting your family first ahead of your ego needs.
Good luck. When you think it out I am sure you will do the right thing and never regret it.

Hey brother. You are a champion in my opinion. You take care of your family. Thats a true champ not what the world says is a champ. Where theres a will theres a way my brother. Im in the same boat as you so dont think I dont know whats it like. Im married and wife was sick and she hates my poker. I calls myself a pro just joking and my wife laughed at me. Didnt feel good and when you have no support it cant feel good. It being are wifes makes it worse. Keep the faith man and believe in your self. Turn that negative energy into positive and prove them wrong. I got faith in you and if you want to talk you can message me in private. Dont ever think poker is more important than your family. Just make a way. We both will!!

I'm not about caring what others think... In life we can't keep everyone happy and that appears to be me in this life so far.

Anyways thanks for all the other positive things you've put in your post, appreciate that thanks bud.

The sum of the parts makes the whole. If you give up everything for one thing, IMO, you have no life. You can concentrate your efforts towards your goals in life. But to really be successful at anything you have to have balance.

And that's why the majority fail at most things and only a couple are set apart.

In life balance is important... in games though is it really? And poker is just a game really, ... when you level up things in different games do you just allocate everything to match its balance? NO!!! ... you select which category you want to be and you pump all those points into one field to get max outcome.

wow aces....it really sounds like you may have made up your mind already and that you were looking for some kind of validation in here.

Divorce is sick. your kids are separated from either you or your wife. The family unit is broken along with their hearts.

If your wife's sickness/medications are making her invalidating towards you. Then what makes you think she could manage raising your kids while you are off doing whatever you think will make you a pro that you can't do while being a husband and father. Sounds like you are the care giver here. your leaving will take that away. Get her well for your kids sake. Then make a decision then. I think you may just be over whelmed by all of this and have long been without ME time. Get your kids mom well first.

maybe i should have just said "nope". Whatever you decide..I wish your kids and you and your wife well. GL

wife should always support you well and if there is no such up to you to choose well, then of course I think is silly family wife and children are the most important thing you love them and as I understand you want a better life but if you seriously think that money is actually rubbish and for them You can not buy happiness, and you will not return my life. in general do so anything you do not regret

Prolly good not to be caring too much what others think, but, dumping your family responsibilities to become very good to great at a game, champion loser would be the title you earn.

The question is, even if you give up everything, are you sure we will be successful at poker?

Family happiness is permanent while poker happiness is temporary.

It's a 100% a no for me. I understand the wife and kids thing but sounds like you need to fixed first your family life. Have time with them. Do great things at work.

Poker is so hard to beat. You should think more before deciding.

I would have done it if I don't have kids and family. 5 years ago I was in the same situation. I got a good job and a happy family but want to play poker full time. Fortunately, i focused on improving on my job, family and health. Now, I can poker as much as a want as a hobby. I've got a bankroll due to my success at my job. Wife and kids are happy. I even discuss poker hands with my wife. I convinced her that poker is just my hobby but I'm serious about it. If you can make your family happy, they will allow you for your own happiness as well. But I think happiness should be deep within us, no external factors. Cheers! Keep us updated on your thoughts!
