I used to play poker professionally for about 5 years. Then when black Friday hit I tried playing live and some of the smaller sites for a short time. I decided I didn't like the smoke from the live games, and online some of the smaller sites I was on closed, merged, or just stopped paying (I lost 3 rolls)... Eventually I just decided my time was better spent doing something like business etc

So now approx 4-5 years later I am getting back into poker as of about 2 months ago and want to start working to improve. I picked up The Mental Game of Poker because I had heard of it and I liked the audible previews. Now I am working through the different sections and also went a head and got both books.

My intention is to post anything useful I can here and look for other peoples insight in their own journey. So if you want to get the book and don't have an audilbe account I think you can add me as a referral and get a free book but I am not 100% sure how that works. Otherwise you can find the book almost anywhere.

My first question and observation go hand in hand.

What is the best way you have found to study and improve your poker game?

I think I have seen (and I admit to being told this before) I tend to over study to the point that things are not effective and I truly don't learn. I also am starting think I might be relying on the opinions or thoughts of others too much and not enough on my own... For instance I might watch 10 videos and read 10 books but not take the time to consider what they all mean relational to each other and how it might apply to my game.

I am trying to work on slowing down and I have decided next time I watch a video I am going to watch without sound then go back to the interesting parts and see what was said after I have formed my opinions or thoughts so I can see how they differ.

Over my play this week I have noticed that I will get into the middle stages of tournaments and then get impatient. This leads me to playing hands I should not and I spew off chips to shorter stacks from decent if not better players that know how to apply the pressure.

So for about 1 hr today I am going to review hand histories and look for spots that I played "non-standard" hands and see if I can find reasons I should or should not have played them.

I also am going to take a break for most days of this coming week from live poker and try to get some other things in order. For instance I need to find a decent workout routine and my business has not made enough income for about 3 months now and I need to find a better way to get new customers. Getting my business to turn around will also help me with my poker goals because instead of spending the money right away on bills I will be able to actually grow my roll or even take shots at higher BI games or tourneys.

I've been so busy with trying to find new business that when I get to play in the evenings it is a very short amount of time and leads me to no study...

I think the remedy here is simple. I'm committing to study during the time I would have played, and then will only play when I really have 1hr or more.

I hope this will lead to some much better posts here.:)
