For historical reasons ? Did a donk make this kind of bet the first time ?
A bet - out of position without the "initiative" - is donkish ?

Historically, I would be surprised if you found out the first use of the word. You already answered the reason that it is called that, because it is made out of position so you have no clue what the original raiser is going to do.

It isn't great to do regardless of what your hand hit. Let's say you hit a set, if you donk bet, your opponent may just fold, whereas he otherwise would have had a likelihood(depends on villain) of making a CB, that you could have raised, or just flatted with to continue extracting.

If you are just making the bet without hitting something big, you are opening yourself up to be reraised out of the pot whereas you may have been able to call just a regular single bet.

if they have raised first best to check, but if you raised it out of position I think it depends on the players if the players in the game are soft, you can raise c bet out of position and do one of the following,
Firstly you can take the pot down
secondly if they just flat call you its a sign of weakness if its a small bet,
3 positive things for us....
they might be chasing a draw, they might be uncertain they hold the best hand (in which case you fire a second barrel) if you barrel small 1/4 of the pot and they call/fold they are going to be weak most of the time, if they have any kind of made hand they will want to get value in the pot. Depending on the river, One more stab will usually do the trick, unless the card is apparent to your opponents limited range and possible draws, Im taking it down 80% of the time

This isn't something I would do without any sort out equity or outs on the flop, but given a good or speculative hand I'll often out play opponants who call me down hoping to donk land the turn etc or test me for weakness on the turn

if they are better players and they start re-raising you then you just adjust your game until the opportunity comes around with a made hand do the c-bet small and you may well get value.

and if your game is full of fish frequently calling then folding, isolate those players raise like 4 x with almost any hand and then hammer the flop first in and they'l coward away enough times to give you a healthy profit

OMG, none of you know this?

They are called donks (Donkey), because they are stubborn - they refuse to fold when all reason and logic says "you are beat, give it up". Donkey's, as in the animal, are known to be stubborn, so there you go.

As a funny aside, this in a way only makes half-sense. Stubbornness is actually a sign of intelligence. A horse, for example, is way more stupid than a mule or a donkey. They will continue to ride full gallop no matter what, which is why you have to stop them and make them rest. Otherwise, they will ride full speed until they drop dead. At the grand canyon, they have mules take you down the narrow path, not horses. Not because they don't fit, but because if they get startled, they might jump right off the edge! See, stupid horse, smart mule. Don't believe that scene in the movie "True Lies" where Arnold tries to get the horse to jump from one building to the next and the Horse stops...In reality that son-of-a-gun would have jumped, even knowing it could not make it. Back in the day of carnivals, they would lift a horse 3 story's up to jump off a board into a small pool of water - they tried a mule, and the damn thing wouldn't budge - do you blame him:rofl:?!? Again, if you try to take a mule down a wash and it will not go, it's because he knows it's too dangerous.

So, they are stubborn, just like some players. Just do not confuse them with a calling station. That's a whole different beast altogether.

I think Daniel is talking about a "donk bet" (when a player calls from the blinds and leads out on the flop from out of position) & not a donk or donkeys.

Um, excuse me, that's MR. DONKEY to you!:D

Which leads me to wonder...do we call them donks because they are stupid or stubborn? I was under the impression it was "stubborn", because stupid makes no sense in this respect (see all that verbiage above); I thought STUPID players were called "fish".

So, am I a Donk, a fish, Or just dumber than the United States Congress?

jokes aside, i used to use donk bets all the time in cash games(when playing zoom). its good if you hit medium pair and are OOP to get value and protect your hand from higher cards coming on the turn or river(villains raising range cards).

I know you fold out worst hands when you make it and you get folds but isnt it better to win whats in the pot on the flop than to get outdrawn on the turn or river by letting them decide to get free cards by checking behind when they are in position?

Ok im a fish but I find that if you call pre oop you can take down a lot of pots by leading out after the flop. I find I do better when I am controlling the action i.e. betting rather than calling. Also if I get reraised I can get away cheaper than if I call call fold. Goodluck.

it is more common to check to the raiser and it also is very weird leading out into someone but I do it sometimes to confuse people are trap. this is a move in my arsenal for advance players because they will normally raise me or fold. its a donk move because youre out of position and have no info on hand but yet you bet for no reason.
