As lot of people know the terminologies for poker, such as continuation bet, 2nd barrel, 3rd barrel, etc, I don't know why someone who didn't make a raise pre-flop but fires out on the flop are called donk bet? What's the meaning behind it? Is it that someone who didn't make a raise pre-flop but raise on the flop are donks?
Some people say it's because you're betting out of position without enough information of players but there are times when you are not the pre-flop raiser and you bet in position on the flop.

This term applies when you bet into the preflop raiser(OTF). If the pot was limped, and you lead out on the flop, that's not a donk bet.
As far as to why its called a "donk bet"...IDK..Just use your imagination:)

In poker, donk betting means betting out of position without the betting initiative (you did not make the last bet or raise on the previous betting round.) It's typically considered an unorthodox and unusual move because the traditional play after passively calling a bet out of position would be to check the next round--a donk bet is unexpected and can throw off your opponent's plans for the hand.

The name "donk bet" derives from the common derogatory term "donkey" for bad players, because bad/clueless players will often make this play without knowing why they are doing it, simply because they don't know what's going on.

Under the right circumstances, however, it can be very good - by no means does donk betting necessitate bad play.:icon_stud

TYVM for lucid explanation.

Because I do "donk-bet" under right circumstances. If there are players with poor post-flop skills who are fit-or-fold players on the flop, it's good to "donk-bet" out since you win more often than not against these type of players. And sometimes, "donk-bet" freezes their ability to c-bet and turn them into fit-or-fold mode. "Donk-bet" can also make the pot big and protect your hand, not give a free card while you have the best of it.

Had wondered why this is called donk-bet instead of other name bcz like you said, it doesn't necessitate bad play but people make it sound like a bad play when it can actually be a good play under right circumstances.

because if your hand wasnt good enough to bet preflop, then most likely you missed the flop, and bet out of position anyway...ie like a donkey

i dont know if 100% of the time is a bad move, but most of the time is it,

what reason should have a player to bet first after the flop if he is not the last raiser? if he hits the flop lets say a set, a flush or a straight, or maybe a trip or whatever he considers he is ahead, although my feeling is that donkeys donkbets when they hit a pair in the flop so they feel the raiser preflop just raises because,

well then if the villain feels he wins because he has a better hand he will reraise the donkey if not he will fold and at the end donkey will win less chips for his hands and will lose more chips too

so donkbet comes from donkey no doubt

donk bets are good to use against donkeys. We're talking about the guy who raises the button every time. Just donk him once a while to mix it up to pick up a free bet. Once he starts getting the hang of that, put in a few value hands in there and start stacking fish.

Usually when you do something someone doesnt like, they call names like donk. But sometimes its legitimate if you scare away the chips.
