Hard to give advice if we don't know how you play.
I always look at the tournaments as a marathon not a sprint.
You do not need all the chips in the first 30 minutes.
Play smart when you get close. Short stacks play reckless
because they think they have to. Check out the link hutpaf shared,
it has some good tips. =)

Please remember I have no idea how you play. This is a general analysis of others who have this issue. I would suggest looking for more situations to play aggressively and steal chips. Once you get in the cashing range you need to stay ahead of the blinds and antes. Pay attention to your opponents and look for opportunities to grab chips. You need to start muscling other players a bit and you need chips to do it. Otherwise you are stuck getting blinded and won't be able to take advantage of your strong hands when you get them.

Well, if you're getting to the top 30-100 in a pokerstars MTT, then you must have general idea and skill when it comes to playing MTTs.

So, you probably have the early, early-mid stakes down pretty well. What is your stack when you enter the mid, mid-late stages? How to to approach these stages; do you tighten up a lot? Or do you open up, steal/resteal a lot more to keep your stack padded?

Sounds like you are too tight in the later stages, and end up bleeding chips. Be more aggressive, and take chances when you are in +EV situations. It may not always go your way, but when it does, those extra chips should help do the trick to get you closer to making the FT.

Yea I am having similar experience. I always seem to get overly excited when i get to the top 100 and start making stupid decisions like all-ins. I hope to gain more experience as I play more freerolls.

posting hands
with as much info
without showing results
would give you some great input by players that have gotten passed this

without that needed info
Id guess you're too tight deeper in,
or you loose patience and play hands you shouldnt
you probably dont loosen up deeper in, or play your stack/position appropriately.
when you're down to 10ish BigBlinds it becomes a shove/fold game
dont limp OutOfPosition with only 8BBs...
know whos tight to make steals from,
so many factors at so many stages

best advise,
stick with CardsChat
keep reading, learning and practicing;)
(and posting hands)

You do not have the patience to play well until the end of the tournament.Patience is the most important quality in a poker tournament.

I'd be very interested in reading these lessons of yours. I'm sure you'd be able to start a thread in either the learning poker section or the MTT section and if it is a truly inspirational post potentially it could end up becoming a sticky

Just be patience and dont give up.Try to open up your range when approching mid and late stage.Exploit your opponent by utilizing your position and you need to steal more often during this stage because the blind and ante were already big enough.

Please note that at the end of the tournament are the best players. And here it is necessary when approaching the final table to be more careful and not risk in vain. I personally try even more to play tight, play only for an over card or pocket pairs.Another important role is played is that if you managed to walk far in the tournament you was a good card. But this can not be all the time. Periods of bad cards need to be able to wait.

difficult question without knowing more, but i would guess that you are either playing too tight and getting blinded out, or too loose and running into stronger ranges

I respect admin's decision here not to have it posted in their forum, it has been offered and posted before in another forum to help players.

They want original material and that sounds like an overall good choice for them, however I still am in position to help so many (free), no advertising any sites, and if you want a copy, just email me (no pm's here please).

Hope everyone is wanting to help others as I do, it makes for better players and more discussions that are worthy of posting.

All the best and support your admin/owner's of this site, they want to keep their forum fresh and I support them too.

it depends where you play (what kind of mtt, structure etc)
learn steal resteal charts, push/fold charts
most of players end in the middle stage of mtt. you need a goodluck / good run to get good stack to fidght for prefinal stage
imho you need to suck out couple of times (44>AA etc)

Don't horry about that! Maybe you don't have the lucky hand to get the FT. It also can happens that you have to change the way you play: maybe you are taking bad decisions! Don't Forget: we have to play with defined hands, "read" our opponents and play with the chips/stakes in moment!!!
A FT and for sure a 1st place will end to appear if you play with your skills and concentration at maximum levels!!!

Thanks guys for this information! I might know my problem now.. I use to get bored before final table and start doing stupid decisions.. Now I try to sit out about 10 min and go outside for a walk. If I have above average stack in top100 it might help. :)

I do not know how you play, but I can tell you that your problem can be solved in your question. because you did not make the final table? perhaps because you are wanting to jump steps? This fault I have is emotional as well, because when I'm with a good head, I can get ITM sometimes and sometimes make the final table. What can I tell you, it serves me well. You can not win a tournament in its early stages, but you can lose the same in the intermediate stage, but when you are in the intermediate stage for the transition to the final table, my advice is to never mind losing, because that is where begins the race for the final table. And being with a comfortable stack certainly will play the first places where this and the best prizes. Make the final table and be the first to fall, I think it's better not do it.

Unable to get past mid game in tourneys

I have a similar problem though I do make it occasionally to the final table. I think my problem is that I get bored or just get tired of getting bad cards and end up blowing off my chips. I know that when I do make final table it's like I've accomplished my goal and know I can reach the money so I don't try any more. Foolish huh? Just don't take the game seriously enough at times and really prefer live games where the personal interaction seems to keep me better focused. Lately only play the freerolls and I think there are too many players on them that are not serious about the game and are just having "fun" or killing time.
