In a previous post I mentioned that I've not been doing as well as I was in the freerolls since I started stat tracking and HUD use. As an experiment I turned them all off yesterday and just played. No HUD or anything running. I finished 42/547, 31/677, 20/1743 and I am currently in 5th in a freeroll that started with 1000+. Anyone have any ideas on why that might be? I really don't feel like I'm playing much differently.

You may be thinking about the HUD stats to much well playing and trying to play to make your stats go I'm the way you think they should. For example if you're running really hot with lots of pocket pairs and hands on Broadway you vpip will probably be much higher than you think it should be. This may cause you to fold marginal hands you should not be folding! When in reality this is a good thing because other players with a HUD will see you as loose when in reality you've been running good. So they will begin to open wider against you because they think you're loose. Causing you to get paid on their miss read.

Yea I'm with you. I was thinking maybe I was playing too tight with the HUD up to get the numbers right, a lot of folded suited semi connectors in late position for sure.

you can not take the values of HUD as a reference in a freeroll, as the game is very animal, no money is play so good poker is not played, and expect any discordance with the values that shows HUD

While a HUD is interesting, it is only a reference. Seldom should it do anything more than giving you another piece of info.

I've had one a long time, and really I prefer the sites where it doesn't work because it is so easy to be swayed by what I think it is suggesting.

Where a HUD does a lot better for me, is figuring out how a player that I have a lot of hands on is playing today, compared to how he usually plays. If over 1000 hands I have a players lifetime stats showing him a 20% VIP, and then change the display to session and see he is playing 40%, and his other stats have jumped too, well that tells me he is either drunk, or pissed at something in his real life.

THAT gives me more useful info than how he played last month.

Point is you generally need a lot of hands on particular players to make any useful decisions based on those HUD stats.

If you have a good number of hand with any player, you should have some notes on them. And those notes are usually better info than a HUD is. Or they should be. Just note that he did this or that, and if you think but are not so sure about a observation, add a ??? after your note, then if he verifies it, you can remove a? or 2.

I think a HUD can be a good reference point, but playing specifically to make the numbers "look right" can negate taking advantage of specific spots that would make you a nice profit. Also, there is a lot of variance in freerolls, so the HUD might not be as good a reference against players who are in for nothing.
