I'm new to cash games, and I've heard that it is best to buy-in for the max (100bb) and keep it full. But I wonder if there is a good time to reduce what you have at the table back to 100bb to protect your profit. What is the strategy behind buying in at the max and keeping your profits at the table?

well the strategy is called "bigstack strategy" and is for advanced cashgame players .

for the starting i would advice the "shortstackstrategy" as it is very lucrative and a lot easier to play , and the profit-taking is clearly defined.

just check out pokerstrategy.com or intellipoker.com for information

the best answer is not some strategy but when good bank roll managment dictates. for example lets say you are using a 5% rule for buy-ins and want to leave when you have more then 10% in play and you have a $500 roll, so you can buy in for $25, lets say you get hit a big pot for $65, you total roll is now $540 with $65 on the table so 65/540=12% you would have 12% on the table meaning you should leave and consider another table

just set goals to yourself and stop when you reach them ( negatives or positives )

like at stockmarket, stop to think and redifine your goals everytime you reach previous goals.

maintain control over your bankroll

i like more shortstack strategy,is more safer.when i make 4x buyin i leave the table and go to try to another one.in bigstack strategy you can make more money but you can loose more money too.

I tend to play bigstack. In fact the only time I don't play bigstack is when I don't have enough to do it. I am still just playing the micros - lol - so no $500 bankrolls here. I find if I can increase my stack by 30% that is typically the most I am going to see on a given table for a session no matter how long it is. I will still stay in case I am on a roll but if I fall back another 30% of my winnings I leave. My experience has been when I stay and play, and play, I generally hit a point where I get too tired and loose focus and will give it all, and more, back.
