Let's say the table cards were A-J-J-J-8, and the 2 highest cards I played from my hand were J-7. Does my 7 kicker play, even though it is lower then the Ace or 8? If so, how? I thought it had to be the best 5 cards.

Quads are always quads. Nobody else can have a J so kicker doesn't matter.

in this situation your hand would be JJJJA. Using your J and the A from the board. You can't be beaten.

If we are talking Omaha, you use 3 cards from the board, so JJJ and 2 cards from your hard so j7. So your hand would be JJJJ7. The A and 8 on the board don't matter because you can only use 3 cards from the board.

This is obviously a question from someone who does not know the basic rules of poker.
If you're interested for this game, it's better to read some books first or watch a video. Good luck and welcome to CC.

If the board was 8-J-J-J-J the kicker would matter. In this case A-2 would win over K-K. 77 vs 66 would be a split pot.

The 7 would not play into the hand, since holdem poker uses community cards for every player, it is meant to combo the 2 down cards with the 5 cards on the table, since you have a jack and the ace is on the board, you will have a hand of 4 jacks with an ace high, the 7 get cancelled.

You have to remember basic poker rules - the hand is made of 5 cards, using ANY of your 2 cards in your hand. But at the same time it means you may not use any of your cads at all. It is possible to take all the cards from the board. Like JJJJA, for example.

Blair wrapped this one up quite nicely. Please be sure to include the game you are playing when you ask a question.
