i usually stop at 3 BI. i had it happen to me last night where i was down a bit, wasn't happy, and didn't want to quit on a losing note. got it almost back to even, and then took a few beats and finally had to stop playing.

Depends how I'm losing. If other guys are getting lucky I usually stop after 2 buyins. If I lose a stack because I'm playing bad I shut it down right away usually.

Proper bankroll management would suggest to not play at that large of a buy-in table.

Since you have $60 you should be at the lowest cash tables possible. And the same for tournaments.

After you lose 1 buy-in you should quit.

Stop playing when you feel you are tilted, steaming, or just plain ol having bad luck. Don't force your play because that's when you will lose the most.

Rule of thumb for me is after 1 buyin, since I've noticed I'll lose the 2nd buyin to, if I keep playing, I've even gone to another site just thinking it was just a bad beat but just seems to follow me, so I stop playing an try to think of what I'm doing wrong, usually I'm just playing to aggressive, then if I still feel like playing I just hit the play tables , there I can be as aggressive as I want lol!!!

Ignore the above posts.
You play until you feel you don't have an edge in the game, and with a minimum starting BR of 20buyins, which is enough for nanostakes.

Play until you feel exhausted and or realize your having a day where the poker gods are frowning down on you

Pretty much this - if you somehow lose five buyins but you still have an edge over the players at the table (and you can still cover the buyins under responsible BRM) then in theory you should stay at the table.

Of course, if you've lost five buyins at the one table then you probably also need to ask yourself if you really have an edge... but that's another issue.

Also to echo what's been said above you're much better off playing $2NL with a full buyin than you are playing $5NL with a short buyin.

It depends on how on tilt I am because I've came back after losing 5+ buy ins but it was because I was very "medicated" I was able to stay focused and calm but usually after a start of a cold streak I'll call it a night

How much volume were you playing when you lost $20? Were you playing one table at a time ? or was this a net loss of $20 in course of winning at some tables and losing at others?

It's hard to be objective sometimes about you own play, but I think the loss of 4 buyins is reasonable considering your bankroll. After losing the 4 buy ins, I'd go back and replay your hand histories through a re-player and try to analyze your play.

Having said that, if $60 is you're total poker bankroll (both live and online), you probably aren't sufficiently rolled to play.

Ideally you should stop when you are thinking too much about previous hands and not focusing on the present. Once you stop playing your A Game or near to it because of lack of concentration then its time for a break.:D
