The most important determining factor is table size.
Obviously if you are playing HU the starting hand range is going to be huge cause you play most hands. 6 max ring tables the starting hands are going to be narrower and full (9) ring is going to be smaller still.
When you decide what range you like then you can factor in how loose/tight the table, your position at the table and whether or not the pot is opened PF by the time its your turn to determine if you want to play that desire hand.
For a full table game it's going to be:
AA KK level 1
AK AQ QQ KQ level 2
suited connectors , AJ KJ JJ QJ, pocket pairs >66 level 3
A3-A10 suited , small pocket pairs <55. level4
I classify this cause it's easier for me to think in terms of the level of strength of these hands as it stands preflop......After the flop everything changes.
level 1 hands may go to 4 bet PF, level 2 hands may go to 3bet,
level 1-2 can be played to a single raise or limp depending own table dynamics. these hands normally should not be played with a raise and reraise preflop when it gets back to your turn.
In HU it's what hands cant you play?
