What Type of NLHE Cash Game Do You Recommend for Beginners?

Hello Everyone. I'm a beginner looking for some advice on what type of cash game I should play. I decided to start playing online poker as a hobby at the beginning of the year. I'm playing 2NL on ACR and I'd like to know what you think is the best type of game for a beginner to play? Full ring or 6 max? Cap or no cap?

It appears 6 max Cap is the most common game on ACR for 2NL so that is what I've played a handful of times. Would it be better to just get on the waiting list for the single Full ring game no cap that is usually running?

I think better NL2 full table is easy to be profitable , just play the basic expecting some hand value and bet as it has many players who call with anything.

Take some time to read up on cash game strategies and on bank roll management. What kind of budget do you have that you can afford to loose. Don't play with scared money (meaning your money you use to pay the bills).
Regarding table size and buy-in, experiment to see where you feel is the most profitable for you.

Thank you for the replies, but I was hoping to get a little more insight in to the differences between how the games play.

I've read a quite a bit about cash game strategy and BRM. As I said, I'm playing as a hobby, so I'm not using money I don't have. My bankroll right now is about $6. I won a dollar from a freeroll and ACR gave me $5 to get me to start playing for real money.

I guess the most basic question I have is, "Is a 6 max game with a Cap going to be tougher for a beginner than 6 max w/ no cap or any Full ring game?"

Full ring, and Micro MTT's on ACR for beginners.

I think with your BR 6 max is out of the question. Simple math shows that just the posting the blinds .01/.02 will be min of .03 per 6 hands it will cost you a min of .03 cents/ 6 hands = 0.005 cents per hand, where full ring would be .03 cents/ 9 hands =.0033 cents pers hand. Which is basically 1/3rd the cost per hand.

If you are worried about losing your starting buy in just buy in short so your BR is taking less of a hit should you get felted. Maybe buy in for 50% of the table max, or even table min you don't mind short stack play. That is basically all a capped table does is limit your risk per hand.

see my thread about Black Chip Poker (same network as ACR) and how i turned $5 into now $266.

I think Mtt's are a better way to build a bank roll than grinding micro cash!!!!

Thanks EA, that is great information.

I'll be sure to take a look at your post. MTTs are tough for me though because I don't normally have a lot of hours straight that I can play. From what saw it looks like most tournaments last 6+ hours. I could pretty much only do that on weekends and even then my wife wouldn't be happy with me leaving her to watch our toddler alone so I can play a game. :D

I don't mind the grind of a cash game. I know the goal of the game is to make money, but since its just a hobby for me right now I don't mind the profits coming slowly. I'm happy to play well and learning to be winning player even if my winnings are small.

P.S. If Black Chip Poker and ACR are the same network does that mean I can use my same ACR account at BCP?

When you sit at a table on ACR some of the players are from ACR, Black Chip, and also, True poker. They are all on the same network. You can open seperate accounts at each site if you would like to.

I recomendaría 9 PEOPLE full ring , it is not necessary to open both the range 6 PEOPLE IN As or Less ...

However , Most Recommended FURTHER AND Start with sit and go , as money station usually being played by less fish and more regular

Go FR at first. 6Max requires a bit more finesse. I highly recommend Blackrains micros book.....

Thanks for the replies. I took everyone's advice and started playing full ring games. Turns out the wait is never very long to get in. It definitely seems a little easier. I've also decided to stay away from the cap games. All the cap seems to do is keep you from winning a big pot when you have a good hand. I guess if I played like a maniac I would appreciate them keeping me dumping all my money on a bad hand. :)

Thanks for the recommendation. I'm about finished with his book now. I've been working to implement his strategies for 2NL in my own play and have found it to be pretty successful. I will say on ACR I seem to be up against more tight players than Loose-passive players and fish. But there seems to be a least one at every table to take advantage of.

0.01/0.02 is generally where you find the more looser newer players to the game, but I tend to find 0.02/0.05 you get more players who tend to understand the logics of the game more, and you can play more strategically.

I like playing 0.02/0.05 because I can 10x my buyin after long session like 2-3 hours. I am going to build bankroll from 8 dollars that I won on blackchip poker freeroll, which was very lucky to cashout becouse I joined after 110min with 1k stack leaving me with just 1.5bb. And decide to wait for good hand and suprise I got KK :p then JJ and KK again and it left me with 20k haha then I went to 36k. I missed so many great spots which would lead for final table with huge prize pool of 6k. There was 3700 entries and I finish 108 (109 are only paid), so my very sloooow play on end saved me. on my last hand I was on bb which left just enough for small blind.

I think that $1.00 SNG games are a good way to earn a bankroll. You can play the micro NLHE rings and get stuck in them forever before you earn anything.

With your BR your choices are very limited. If you play 1$ SnG you can play perfect and lose your entire BR due to variance. FR .01/.02 your best bet by far. You can also get nowhere quick as well as embrace variance, but you are not going to have a lot of choices with $6 BR. Do not go to .02/05 as suggested above. Not until you have a better roll. (And are beating .01/02 regularly)

I'm in agreement with you Fletchdad. I'm staying away from SNGs and tournaments for now. I need the freedom of being able to sit down and leave the table whenever I need.

I've taken the advice and have been playing FR .01/.02 for the last week. I'd say I've done much better and am up to $8.50. I've only played a couple hundred hands but the majority of sessions I walk away with a tiny profit. I would never think of moving up until I am seeing significant winnings at the lowest level. If I can't beat the donks at 0.1/0.2, why would I think I stand a chance against better players at higher stakes?

I'm not concerned about the barely-there bankroll I have. I already plan to deposit $40-50 dollars at some point if I decide to stick with it. I just want to gain some experience and make sure I enjoy playing before I make that commitment.

This actually sounds like a very good plan. Good luck!

Maybe Fixed Limit cash game with small stakes like 0.05/0.10 until the player gets some experience

6 max is typically more aggressive since the blinds are payed more often so widening your preflop raise range is important as well as position.Variance is also higher in 6 max IMO.Good luck playing whatever you choose....scorp

Lowest full ring game. 1 table for starters, then 2 etc.

As a beginner, I think its best to play in full ring games. It is much easier to wait until you get good cards before having to risk any bets. On 6 player tables, I find that you end up playing many more hands and both you and others are playing with much weaker starting hands. This means that you have to be more skilled post flop and better at reading other players and the situations as they develop. This implies a more experienced play style.
