What is tight?

I think supertight play is playing only AA, KK, to AT in hand. Loose play is playing every hand and allin play. Discuss your idea of tight play and the reason for the type of player you are. I prefer tight play and consider myself a fair player. I dislike loose playing as it requires more luck than skill.

I too consider myself a TAG player. To me, playing tight is just being more selective about your opening hand range depending on your position.

I wouldn't say loose play requires more luck and actually think that LAG takes more skill than it does to play tight. The reason being is you have a good read and understanding of your opponents and how they play, you have to know when you continue to fire out and when you have to back down. When you're a tight player, you're usually coming out firing with a very strong hand, if not the best hand. So, its easy to go to showdown at times because if you're playing strong hands, you're going to win most of the time. I would love to learn how to play LAG, but I just can't take the swings that LAG players go through. The pros of playing LAG is you're basically unpredictable. For TAG, the pros are you usually have a good/strong hand and your swings arent as bad. The con is that you sometimes can become too predictable.

Its always good to be able to switch gears and play differently. I dont think one style is better than the other, but its good to know how each style works.

People always gimme this gibberish about TAG & LAG, and there's some truth to it. Some players are always going to be more loose than others.

However, you shouldn't be playing TAG/LAG just because that's what kind of player you are. You should be adjusting your playing style to your opponents. Because playing ideal poker will never win you the maximum, exploiting your opponents is what wins the max.

So if your opponents are playing too tight, never defending their blinds, limping with weak hands that are unlikely to hit the flop, ect. then you should be playing a very LAGGY game against them. If they're total spewtards, who bet & stack off too lightly, call too many raises before the flop, then you should be very tight & selective with your starting hands & postflop play.

Stop worrying about "gee, what starting hands should I play with" and start worry about "what starting hand should I play in this situation". Depending on the action before you & the situation, KQ can be total garbage, and 89 suited can be the nuts.

I used to be TAP (tight and Passive), thinking I was TAG, but I never got that aggressive part down until this spring. So you may think your TAG, but are you really?

With a new found actual aggression, and all the things it teaches you may find, as I did, that it is the aggression that counts, along with position, and it allows you, again, as it did me, to loosen up a bit, or even quite a bit at times.

Probably the most important thing this has taught me is to NOT label myself, that is something others do. There are times when Tight is right, and loose is a loss, but the opposite occurs as well.

TAG wouldn't stand a chance in hell over a lengthy tourney unless you changed gears. So, since I believe I have a fair grasp on TAG, perhaps its time to explore LAG.

But you'll notice that in both those predominant lables its the ag that is important.

Tjank s for your responses it helps to view other players opinions and give LAG a try but in moderation. Loose style allin preflop with any hand is not for me.

Watch your statistics on the site where you play. For the most part, if you are playing more than 30% of your hands you are playing loose. Also, watch your winning at showdown stats. If you aren't winning at showdown more than 70% of the time, you need to adjust your play.

Depending on the situation, I generally switch it up between TAG/LAG/TAP.


But would definately TAG and TAP this......

i prefer tight super aggressive normally. especially online. but everything is read dependent. when playing cg's i will play big hands from any position in hopes of hitting the flop good. same for mtt's. the difference for me is that in a cg in late position i will play any two cards and take a flop most times. this not only throws off my oponents but when the cards are hitting i can make a lot of money with this method. but in mtts i stick with the upper echelon of hands just cuz the money is best deepest and i find that tight aggressive play works pretty good on the net. gl and play on.

If you are winning showdowns more than 70% you are folding before showdown too often imo.

tight player

I consider myself a tight player i usually only play big pairs above 10 like aa kk qq ak and aq if there is a raise of any kind will fold my pair of 88 or lower in a heartbeat. I do like to play suited connectors in the right spot but good luck

maybe your right at the super tight thing but when will you ever get those kind of hand like AA KK QQ it might take forever to get those hands and if you wait for them you might not be able to play the game. tight for me is just picking the right cards to play.

Well tight is usually only playing premium hands!! that would your basic definition

i guess there are good arguments for being tight and loose.. when you play tight you only play the good hands so you're more likely to pick up the pot when you play it... with loose play.. you're constantly at risk of losing a substantial amount of your stack but at times when people are going card dead you could accumulate a lot from blind stealing... whether one is better than the other is up for debate... i personally think that in ring games you can play a bit more tight and during tournament play you need to be a little mroe loose.. in a 5k entry tournament you definetly won't cash without stealing blinds a few times.. you simply can't afford to always wait for big hands.... also a lot of times the way you play should depend on who you are playing.. i like to be a bit more loose when i play tight players because its simply easier to steal blinds as they fold mediocre hands.. but when i play loose players.. im more cautious and i tend to be not necessarily tight but i like to trap and win a lot when i have a hand as its easier because you know that your opponent bets out a lot... the style of play should depend on the style of your opponents...
