Aside from being in the black, what are some things that define a winning player? Aggression, control? Give me some feedback, winning players: what are your strongest traits?

learning to use the search feature of cardschats comes in handy to find information that is out there to learn from.

some great gems in the forum.

being in the black in the longrun is certainly what most importantly defines a winning player, how they win is a totally different topic and varies based on limites and styles etc.

Theres a lot of consistent players who just cant close the deal... A winner is one who when it gets late has a habit of finishing strong. Finding a way to finish at the top or right there. Winners are mostly naturals, it just comes to them. He also adjust to his table and makes great reads.

I can say a winning player if he can break even in a given time- say 3 months.
His wins would be those accumulated points and status level.

You can't be a winning player if you only break even unless, I guess, you are playing at such massive stakes that the player points you gain are wonderful.

Other than being in the black, regardless how you got there, here is some good advice...

"You got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em,
Know when to walk away and know when to run.
You never count your money when you're sittin' at the table.
There'll be time enough for countin' when the dealin's done.

Now Ev'ry gambler knows that the secret to survivin'
Is knowin' what to throw away and knowing what to keep.
'Cause ev'ry hand's a winner and ev'ry hand's a loser,
And the best that you can hope for is to die in your sleep."

Just about sums it up :D

It depends. Various factors can have different weights, which can change as your goals change. For instance, it takes some degree of work ethic for a newb to become a winning player at the micros, but not the same degree for everyone. Also, the importance of work ethic can change; e.g. a winning player may decide, either temporarily or permanently, that continuing to move up in order to win more is not worth the work required to do so.

Patience, composure, strong temperament,
Intelligence, discipline practice.

I think skill is important but without the above huge success is minimal
you gotta be chilled and controlled and working on your game

The ability to minimize or eliminate the effects of tilt. Going even deeper, recognizing certain behavioral/thought patterns as the result of tilt and coming up with a plan on how to address them.

You have to be fearless, can't be afraid to to lose all of your chips. Trust instinct and experience. Patience is extremely important. You can't tilt. and if you do catch yourself and take a break. You will only make mistakes when your not your best.

Continueous study of the game, always reading and staying on point learning new changes in the game of poker as it evolves. You must evolve with it.

Proper Bankroll management is so important and can break a lot of new players because they haven't experienced a 2 month losing streak before. lol

always paying attention to betting patterns of your opponents and being aware of your table image and using that to your advantage.

And of course winning. Winning more than you lose makes you a winning player. good luck!

I would say one thing for sure is ummm WINNING lol.
j/k .
But in all general honesty A winnning player is someone in control of there game, there emotions, there upswings and downswings, someone who has good bank roll managment is a key factor, without good bank roll managment you can be the best player in the world and be a losing player.

I think few aspects to consider will make you win:
Knowledge of the game
Security in each decision you make (consider that every action, is a decision)
Self-control, meaning you to be able to play with intelligence and not with emotions.
Ability to read other players, this is fundamental in order to guide your decisions. You don't play agressively just because you play like that, you use agressiveness if you think it will be efficient against a particular player, but first you have to read the player. Reading takes practice but its the core thing about poker. Many players learn poker to learn how to read players. Consider this as the fundamental.
