Hi there, I'm what most would consider a beginner in poker. I have read a book or two on poker. I'm am currently reading super system by dolly right now. When I play with my friends I usually win majority of the time, but what I still haven't comprehended some of the mathematical meanings. Such as a favor over someone else. Like a 5 to 4 favor.. Are there any books or ect that I could study up on the help?

Thanks

Read more about probability and odds. You can look it up on google or youtube. HUDs will provide you with all this information, while you're playing. Seasoned poker players use those mathematic techniques to interpret whether or not the odds are against them.

The probability is important and the theory too but you have to practice and play as much as you can

YES

Phil Gordons little green book taught me all the math and ratios ive ever needed in poker. Highly recommend as it has pictures and is easy to understand for people new to poker or even just want to sharpen their skills.

Watch Twitch streamers like Jaime Staples

I'm a beginning player as well, I've gotten a lot of value out of watching twitch streamers like Kevin Martin and Jaime Staples.

They talk through their decisions as they are playing so it's really helpful to watch.

"Polished poker" by John Anhalt is good for such goals. It's easy to read and contains a lot of useful information and free to load. In addition it has a paid workbook with different questions and tasks to the content of the book.

Polished Poker Vol I is a good ebook, but it is cash game specific.
I'd throw super system in the trash.
Dan Harrington's books are gold.
If you're wanting to learn simple concepts like odds, and probability the internet has a plethora of information starting right here on cardschat's strategy articles.

Phil Gordon's Little Green Book is a good starting place to get a general feel of poker. Then I would play for a while until you are comfortable playing. Once you have done this I would pick a book and pick one topic at a time and work on it. Don't read the book cover to cover and expect to remember it all. Take one idea, read it, play, reread, play, reread until you have it down, then pick the next topic, rinse and repeat.

assuming you understand the math terms like odds, you can learn the terms easily on this site. I recommend reading the articles on this site under "strategy articles"

The Mathematic of Poker by Bill Chen is great for the math end of things. Dan Harrington's books lays things out there very well also.

I don't read many books and I wouldn't say that I'm amateur in poker but I some close friends are and some have read, and some haven't read books to start their amateur career in the poker world.

My best advice is to be patient (like many others have suggested) and to also keep your bankroll in check with the games that you play. You never want to play more than you have or to feel scared playing a limit that you are not able to afford.

I wish you the best of luck and this is a great community to discuss your ups and downs (will happen) in poker and hope you have great success in doing so. Go get the money! :)
