I've been thinking about this as I've decided to make a poker comeback. I thought about reading small stakes poker by Ed Miller....then I stumbled upon a more recent ebook by blackrain79 and thought about that. Then, I read something interesting which basically stated that these books are obsolete as soon as they're printed. I understand the theory behind that statement but I'm not sure if its truly reality.

I also watched a few YouTube videos; 1 by blackrain and another by someone else and that actually helped quite a bit. I learned that I need to be WAY more aggressive with my betting and stop assuming that these players are actually GOOD players until they prove otherwise.

The final piece is software. I know its out there but what's the best stuff these days and how much does it cost.

I know lots of thoughts and questions...feel free to share yours lol

A couple of my friends love that Ed Miller book. Poker is always changing and evolving and it's important to keep up with the times. Probably easier to implement newer strategies while playing live and you can see the person and see what generation they are actually from. Personally, I don't think good poker books lose their relevancy, however it is reasonable to assume that certain trends have changed. But just like anything else poker is bound to come full circle. You have to find your own style and what's comfortable for you. The most important thing is to adjust to others playing styles and react accordingly; this only happens through arduous hours and hours put in at the table.

Wow! Thanks for the insights. Much appreciated! Any word or topics on HUD and its basics?

I use PokerTracker 4 as my HUD and I've found it to be invaluable in improving my own game. I started with the 30 day trial and ended up purchasing it for $60 and I can't say that I regret it at all. Another good piece of software is PokerStrategy.com's Equilab, which you can use to determine how well you can expect to do with a certain hand against an opponent's range, which you can construct yourself or use their predefined ranges - this one is completely free!

Even if some of the strategies in some poker books might be outdated they are often still worth reading. These books can help you a lot, even if you do not implement their strategies in your game in the end. You can still learn a lot just by reading how different people judge different situations and which factors they base their decisions on. When you have read stuff from different authors you will have a much broader look at your hands and can avoid to play "by recipe"

I regard the huds an ecalculators like great tools. But I like to make calculations by myself. That makes me have a good overview about the game and help to choose good options.

To improve my best tool is the analysis of hands that the tournaments that I played to be able to detect every mistake that I commented awkwardly in the game and know when to withdraw from one hand when I managed to find myself in the same situation for me is the best way to improve in the game since one part of correcting their own mistakes

Voodoo dancing, mantras and spells are better than solvers and analysis programs (if you don’t know how to use)

Hi, Everyone! Earlier, when I'm only started to play in the Poker, the all were interesting, I mean, I red the various articles by Poker, watched the learning videos to Internet, the different Poker Events by TV, and etc... But this period gone. Now, I'm basically, analyse only my own game and game my opponents on the current moment, and on those limits, that I'm play now... And I think this is correct, because nobody don't know, what will tomorrow, and hence, why to waste your forces and, main, your precious time on the excess and unnecessary now?! I try to live Today... And Time Shows!..:wavey:

I tried to use HUD, but I did not adapt, maybe need more studies of use of the tool.
As far as I know, if you play the same schedule and tournaments every day, you start having a database of your opponents, I think this might be useful at some point.

I mainly watch broadcasts of major tournaments with open cards. It helps to understand the logic of decision-making by professional players and improve understanding of poker as a whole.:top:

I would recommend the bencb course but it is quite expensive for a beginner. on a free basis, I advise you to carefully watch streams about players, without being distracted by poker at this time. and rewind to incomprehensible moments for themselves, disassembling them. so you can really get a high skill of understanding the game without buying various courses and training

Twitch , ICMizer , PT4 , I post here in the forum some hand histories for feedback by fellow CCers or pros. I also like watching and reading articles and videos from Upswing Poker and Raise Your Edge , at the moment only the free content , maybe in the future I am going to purchase a paid course(I think they worth the money) but for the time being I am not so serious about my game.

But what helped me the most till now was a whole tournament review by some Greek pros where they explained many spots - I don't know why this was free - but those guys really want to help the Greek community.

I am skeptic about reviewing by your own some super marginal spots , IMO it would be better to get feedback by a better player than you or by another player in general in order to tell you his opinion and his perspective.
