This is a discussion on What kind of poker is best for beginners? within the online poker forums, in the Learning Poker section; What kind of poker is best for beginners? your experience when you started to play?:confused::confused:
I think that the old fashion home poker game for pennies is a fun way to learn poker.. It is friendly and stress is not high.. It offers a variety of games that teach hand rankings and often will even add some wild cards.. lots of calling and fun to win but the basic learning of hand rankings and when and how to draw on your outs and the good and bad of bluffing and calling with nothing and helps with the wonder of 'why did I lose there'. Some days taking poker to serious is NOT fun. Idk how many times I sat and watched a guy explode over a bad beat in the $100 freeroll... LOL you are not playing in the wsop and a lot of these people do not have a clue as to what they are doing but they want to win and to win you got to be all in.
Typical story of a guy learning poker.. has never played before was sitting at the bar and decided cause his buddy was getting in he would too.. and its a $20 MTT with about 60 people.. so we are going along and this guy sits down and I had a pretty good stack going and it happens the AA comes on the button I raise it all in at this point cause there was a raise in front and to just pick the pot up now would be great.. but the new guy in the blind looks at his cards forever and hes like 'so what do I do then?' another guy just tells him 'if you think you have the best hand then call if not fold but this is for all of your stack' and he almost folded until the guy added 'but if you win you double your stack' so the player is thinking big now lol and decided he would take that gamble with the Q6o and makes the call.. flops a Q and leaps to his feet thinking he won the hand here he fist pumps and the dealer tells him.. 'the AA is still ahead'.. BUT the 6 on the river won it for him and the guy didn't realize he had won till they told him and he goes 'I WON!?' then again leaps to his feet fist pumping and bragging it up. It was quiet funny cause that is the thrill we all seek.. Of course it wasn't too fun for me to sit and watch him give all of my chips away 3 hands latter against JJ who flopped a set. He had no read on the board and called the all in with undercards that didn't have a prayer.

In general, some form of fixed limit. It's less intimidating as you won't be facing a stack decision that can knock you out at any time. It's also easier to transition from FL to NL than the other way around. Once upon a time, you had no choice as every game in town was FL.
These days, finding decent small stakes FL games isn't easy, live or on-line. Live venues still offering these games (assuming they go off) have such larcenous rakes that you can't expect to make anything. Play and count the money spent as experience.
Perhaps the only alternative left is small stakes on-line NLHE. Start at the smallest stakes, don't expect to win, and use the playing time to develop "flop sense", to get a feel for what constitutes a "dry" flop, a "wet" flop, and to detect flops that result in orphan pots where no one really wants to fight over it.

Start playing poker with the best of the most popular and common type of poker Texas Hold'em (NLH). Then comes a less popular Pot-Limit Omaha. Very unpopular games such as Razz, Badugi, 2-7 Triple Draw, 5 Card Stud and other variations. Make specific recommendations to the beginner what to play - can not, simply because it is a matter of taste.
