Hello fellow poker lovers,

I would like to know what are good spots, or situations, to check/raise?
What do you think are good reasons to check/raise? Just to be clear; I am not talking about hands, but situations or spots.

Love to hear your view on this.

Thx!

I dont really know can this be the answer you want but one would be if you are early you check and villain c-bet smaller and you raise because you think that he missed the flop or you connected big. Same thing can be done on the river as well if you called previous streets and you have hit a hand and you are first to act...
Another thing that i can think of is that you were an initial raisor, got yourself multiple callers and it is checked to you but you are not last to act (mid position), now if you have flopped absolute nuts you ca check if you are sure that late position will bet so you can raise...
Hope this helps...

When you're without position vs a single opponent who did an open-raise is a good option to get a little more value to the hand.

-You raise pre and get 3bet in a way that feels like jacks or queens (bet size says they want to close the action).
-You call and there is an ace on the board and two of any suit.
-You check and they cbet half the pot.
-You check-raise 3x.

Hopefully they fold.

This worked for me in a Bovada 100k in which I raised in early pos with TJs. I pushed the villain off of QQ because he wasn't willing to float. I'm basically saying that I have a strong ace or a set. I usually wouldn't bet 3x on a flush draw, although some might.

Pretty standard flop to bluff at. Unfortunately I didn't get anywhere in the tourney but was happy with the play.

BTW, if you use this on me I will float your flop and turn bets just to test you. :)

I think you can use the check raise when you have nuts(sometimes). For example u have full house(flop) and you think someone had draw on this board because u bet on flop he check. On turn u check he check or u bet and he call(card didn't give a flush) On river he catch a flush u check he raise and u re-raise. Don't use it for passive player if u see that your opponent play agressive and mostly raise and bluffing a lot it's good to check raise.

It depends on your read on the table. Like all decisions its very situational. I tend to use it when i have a very loose player who is raising every hand.

You flop a set with no flush or straight draw's i normally check then would re raise their raise. but if you flop a set with major flush or straight possibilities then i would probably raise big to start

but if your opponent has a higher set than your just screwed!

when u have a good hand, and you are out of position.
the player 2nd to act have no hand and would have more chance to bluff.

by check raise, you would achieve these goals:
1 build a large pot
2 get value from weaker holdings.

think this is the ideal situation to make the check raise.

a good situation for a check raise is against a player c-betting alot or someone who notably gives up on a hand alot

heres an example of a good spot for a bluff.

You've been playing very tight and the player to your right opens for 3x on the button you call him and the flop comes down A-J-8 rainbow. Villain has been opening fairly wide and will likely c-bet the flop.
We check villian raises for around 1/2 - 2/3 the pot.
We then come back over the top for about 3 times the c-bet.
since our image is tight this player has no option but to give up the hand there without an ace since he'l be outpriced for any other hand

We can also check raise with the goods when we believe a player will call us perhaps the opposite of the tight image would work in our favour

This is always a fun move to pull off and get them to pay you. I like to set this up with a pre-flop call, a check then fold out. Then in a later hand with the same type of play to get an aggressive player to put chips in the pot and re raise and take it down right there. I do agree that you can do this at a time with the nuts, but also can be used as a semi bluff or just a straight bluff. I do use this type of aggression against tight players who show weakness (pre flop limpers or min raises pre-flop). Good Luck

Most answers deal with you having been there long enough to get a read on at least some if not all players at table (harder to do at a tournament). Some nights I find it useful to do it early in my session with cards I can easy fold setting up for bigger pots later in the night by using some of the same advice listed above. Tho this does cut down on your ability to use check\raise as a bluffing tactic. Taking down easy (small pot size) hands should come second to building bigger successful hands.

One of the best times to check raise is when you are out of position on a paired flop. Having a hand like Kh9h in the sb and defending against the button raise, you see a flop of 477 rainbow.

This is a good spot to check raise, since you can so easily rep a 7 with hands like 78s,76s,A7,78o,67o and if the player on the button has big cards, he has not hit the flop. Even if he/she is holding big over cards like AK, it's hard for them to call cause if you have a 7, they are only drawing to runner runner outs. So they are thinking, "even if I hit an Ace or King on the turn, will my hand be anygood? how big of a bet will I have to call on the turn ? "

Generally paired boards a good situations to check-raise, but try to avoid doing so vs. really tight opponents as they will likely have a hand that can call. Also more experienced players will often float here and try to steal on the turn.
