Hey everybody!
So, here's the deal. I've been grinding at freerolls and small tournaments for a year now since I went broke by stupidly putting my whole bankroll on the table.
I've grinded my way up from $0 to over $1000 by playing very small tournaments online.

I want to start playing live cash games (for some reason I just can't play well online) Probably because I don't have a computer that can run any software like poker tracker, not that i'd want to take 10% of my bankroll out to get it anyways.

Basically, I want to actually build my bankroll outside of the small tournaments. I've been playing, but my MAX buyin is currently $50 which is the minimum at the tables locally and I just feel SO inadequately stacked at the table.

I'm fairly strapped for cash but I COULD put some of my own money into my bankroll to make it "big enough" to buy in $100 at 1/2 tables live. Do you think I should do this? Or should I try to get good at micro stakes cash online using more conservative bankroll management?

I went and played the other day and did well, I think i just ran over the first table I went to ( left up $195 after 3 hours of play) and then lost $70 on a hand where I had 88% the best of it, but also a table where I probably shouldn't have been playing, players were too good.

Bank roll management guidelines are similar between online and live. If you can put aside the necessary number of buy-ins for live play so that you don't play scared, you should be good to go. Live is supposed to be softer than online. However as you have learned, you still have to pick the right tables.

If you're strapped for cash, just play online as you have been for a while longer until you are no longer strapped for cash. Put aside a small amount each month for your live bank roll project until you get enough.

Sounds like you want to burn your hand on the stove. Try live a few times, never bringing more than 10 to 20 percent of your bankroll.

If you lose half your roll at the live tables, you know you need to resort to what you do well, which is grinding the freerolls to nurse the bankroll

IF you're hoping to start playing live cash games I'd suggest playing online cash games first & always playing 100bb's deep. Personally I'd never want to play unless I could buy in max.

It's hard to find good live cash games. In the casino or poker club you'll never know if some of your opponents at the table are not in the same team. It's even worse in the internet, players team up and they don't even have to type or tell their hands to their team members, they simply put on additional monitors and share their screens using teamviewer or other screen sharing Apps. I believe that in your case it's better to stick to low buy-in MTTs and get a free hud, some sites provide free HUD for 30 days or for buy-ins under $7.5, you can also get HM2 for registering at some poker sites, not sure if any English speaking sites provide such freebies. Google will help you.

I guess that you haven't studied any of the short stack strategies for cash games? Pokerstrategy website has articles that might help you. I miss days when 20bb stacks been allowed. It was fun. Push/fold and after a double up simply moving up to a new table at the next limit with 20bbs again. Full stacked players simply have to fold their preflop bluffs with suited connectors, Arags and other types of semi-trash hands, or call and get punishment. Switching to short-stack strategy in cash games is also a good option after withdrawing big part of the bankroll. It lets you stay at or close to the limit you're playing.

Several years ago majority of poker sites switched the min buy-in to 40bbs and killed the fun. But it can be found, for example at ACR they allowed 10bb buy-ins at some tables, not sure if they still do, haven't visited it for a long time:thumpdown However 40bb is still nice. 40bb stack is a good reason for the full stacked fish to call a preflop 3bet with some marginal hand, cause fish will keep in mind that the maximum possible loss in current deal is less than half of his stack. Also all full stacked players bluff more often at flop-turn vs short stacks, it's a statistical fact.

In general full stack is a single option for high limits, if you plan to double or triple up and leave the table. At low-mid limits, where many players are throwing their money into the air more often, the short stack strategy is a nice option, it's a good choice if you're planning to leave the table with 5-8 full buy-ins, in this case it actually doesn't really matter if you're starting with 100 or 40bbs.

Playing 1/2 live - ideally you want to have a minimum of 10 maximum buy ins.

For me locally max 1/2 buy in is $300 - so ideally I should have a bankroll of $3000 to attempt playing these stakes seriously.

Myself I dont have a ton of cash set aside to play live games. I have about the same amount as you do. When I want to play 1/2 I take about $500 - $600 with me minimum - and if I lose it, that's fine because I am not playing for a living.

If you have $1000 you dont mind going broke with playing 1/2 live - I would say buy in for at LEAST $200 - which is only 100bb - that way if you do happen to get all in with players that have you covered you can make some $$$ instead of starting with $100 and getting it in when you only have $80 or less left.

If you want to play live and you think you are good enough for it - take $400 - $600 with you - sit down - play your best game - and see how it goes. The worst case scenario is you will lose. If you are not comfortable with that idea then you should not be playing because you are not ready.

Phil Ivey once said if you cant take a $100 bill and light it on fire you shouldn't play poker - if you afraid of the risk to your current bankroll then you are not comfortable enough to be playing at your best.

I hope this rant of mixed advice helps. Good luck to you and your future decisions.

You probably don't have a big enough roll. Personally, I think that having 1,000 bbs for live is pretty good if you are a strong player. But for sake of nerves and life and stuff, having over 2k bbs is probably better. I'd consider just working a job to get more money to play with or seeing if a friend can back you.

Guess again.

My post was meant for the OP... to help them improve upon their skills on the cheap.

Some sites are combating the short-stack hit and run tactic, so ability to implement such a strategy may be limited.

Better off just keep grinding per usual, build your BR till your adequately funded, then plan your attack.

Make a game out of your grinding efforts, setting stages to accomplish and before you know it, your well on your way!

What? 1-2KBBs? You don't have a upper limits for the buy-in at your casinos/clubs?

Yeah, all sites are against hit and run, that's why it's better to play several poker sites and quit playing for several hours if you've won a lot and majority of fish players has left the tables, simply switch to Party after catching all fish at the Stars and vice-versa.

Don't play at any table unless you have at least 100 BB to start. If fifty dollars is your max, you should start at .25/.50 and see what the quality of play is like at those tables. I would actually rather take fifty dollars and play several tournaments.
