I'm able to make money semi-steadily in micro cash games, but I do pretty badly every time I do a micro SnG or Freeroll MTT. So are there some major differences i should know about?

cash games, sngs, and MTTs have three completely different strategy and styles of play! it would be almost impossible for someone to tell you everything you'll need to know here in this thread, I would suggest maybe watching some videos and really studying up on the game to learn the ins and outs.

Good luck always! ;D

Just SOME of the reasons would be

In cash games there's no blinds increasing letting you wait for premium hands unlike in mtt where your constantly trying to stay afloat and ahead of the blinds forcing you to play less premo hands OOP

On the other hand cash games require a lot more information to be profitable (ex. a HUD) because most likely you'll be playing a lot more hands with the same people at a cash table while your likely to move tables in mtt or be done with a sng within an hour or two

Short answer Cash games = strong post flop play MTT/Sng = strong pre flop play

MTT/SnG Hand range has a lot to do with it, and stealing the blinds when you can. As players are knocked out your hand range has to open up.
Do a search for shove/fold hand charts for SnG's/MTT's.

Thanks for the answers, guys, I have a little better grasp on how I should adjust my play now, but I guess I'm just gonna have to do some reading specific to tournament hold'em to measurably improve my game.

In cash games, you have to have a good solid strategy in how you want to play and other players really look at how many hands you play and how aggressive you are.

In tournaments and sngs, your strategy changes and most of it is because of stack sizes. Because of blinds increasing, you have to get real aggressive at time or start tightening up and avoid losing unnecessary chips.

Also, freeroll mtts and regular mtts are a lot different. In freeroll mtts, you have to be really tight and a lot of times just go all in with big hands because theres higher chances you will get called. Theres more donking going on and players are really just looking at increasing their own stack - they dont pay attention to how others are really playing. You will either get super tight or really loose players.

Couple of good books to get started off with are >
Harrington On Holdem Vol.1 & Vol.2. They're a bit outdated but will give you a decent foundation.

Cash games: you can always have a full stack. You need to play good post flop poker all the time.

Tourneys: Blinds increase, strategy changes as the blinds get bigger. Post flop poker - cept stuff like calling pre / shoving ATC OTF - ceases to be an issue after a certain stack size is reached (small).

Plus a whole lot more shit as well....
