Im just getting into poker and was wondering if any of you could suggest some decent books to learn from? I know all the basics and things, but i feel like i should keep reading to improve my game and not just keep playing more tables.
Also what would be the best amount to make my first deposit with and what tables should i start out at?

Thanks.

Your best bet is to check out the 'search' feature in the 'Learning Poker' section.
There's also alot of good stuff in the 'Strategy Aricles' (link at top of CC page).

Here's some links to help you get started:

Also, look up 'Bankroll Management' for tips on how much to deposit depending upon what your goals are & what you figure you'll be playing (ie. what limits, tourney or cash, etc.)

gl & happy reading :)

I always recommend freerolling your bankroll, when you have won some money, you are ready to play.
If you don't have the patience for that, deposit minimum..don't start in the middle, play the smallest tables of your preference that is available, work your way up slowly..or you will be depositing again soon.

gl gl gl!!!

Start with the basics. Learn to play solid ABC poker first. At the lowest levels, this is enough to make you a winning player. From there, you can build your game to raise your win rate and move up in stakes.

One of the most common ways in which beginners slow down and even stop their advancement is by thinking they can do too much too soon. For example, they learn a new play and start using before adequately understanding the situational factors that should be considered and how to weight them.

You can try with this books: " The Theory of poker", "Small Stakes hold'em", "Phil Gordon's Little Green Book". For the deposit, you can deposit how much you want, maybe $50, $100, $200, whatever, and for the tournaments you can play sit&go tournaments or if you play on poker stars you can try with zoom. I think that this will help you. Good luck at the tables!

I like Phil Gorden's Little Gold Book, but half of that is about Omaha.
He does say throughout the book that where the hold 'em advice differs from the Green Book then the Gold is more up to date so probably worth looking at

Why not make a small deposit and then you will be able to play the FirstDeposit Freerolls? I have no clue what most poker sites offer but I know the ones on Merge are good.
I am new to playing online poker and am pretty new to poker. I made a small deposit on some poker sites and now I am playing the First Depositor Freerolls on Merge network. I only deposited $25 and already I have won $118.40 from these Freerolls in one week. They usually have about 70 entrants and the top 22 players get paid. First place prize is a $109 tournament ticket and some money too. The play in them seems 100% better than the other freerolls I have tried playing online (ones where you hardly win anything or win an entry to another freeroll and everyone is going allin for the first ten minutes).

The Green book covers a lot of basics that is not covered in the Gold Book.
The Gold Book is not an updated Green Book but more like, "What I have learned about poker since my Green Book was published, and some of it is just no longer what I told you before."

That's a good thing as poker is continually evolving and changing in it's approach and strategies.

The Gold Book is not for beginners. It gets into concepts that will be of limited help if to anyone who has yet to build a solid base game, and might be counter-productive in terms of trying to over-think vs opponents against whom multi-level thinking isn't needed or even appropriate.

My GAWD dude, you are such a whore about this Dusty Schmidt book.

It has NOTHING, NADA, ZERO, ZIP to do with improving anyone's poker game. It's a lovely and easy little read but it will not (nor does it pretend to) make you any better at the table. As most reviews on it you will find on it say - it is filled with fluff and common sense. Okay there was one guy who called it "revolutionary". Guess what? He's a friend of Dusty's. That you Reptar?

Ayrton - do not get this book. It is not what you are looking for. Stick with the standards for now - Phil Gordon, Dan Harrington, Ed Miller, etc.

Lolz, I do not know Dusty Schmidt and have no reason for recommending his book other than I think it tells fundamentals and basic stuff that will make anyone who isn't a complete moron into a winning poker player, provided you know some simple basics already.

I could go on and on about it, but I think you should just read the reviews and decide if it is something you are interested in. If you just want strategy tips or how to read people, this isn't for you. This is the book that tells you how to take your skills and turn them into a business that regularly brings in money and maintains a winning mentality.

Pokernews likes it but says "There is nothing groundbreaking about any of the individual pieces of advice in this book..."

That is my only point. It is a nice little read but doesn't have any revelations, just affirming common sense. I did enjoy reading it but felt like it missed. I think Dusty knows that as he is working on a Volume 2 - at least he was.

Look at the reviews on Amazon of the real people. Of course with those you need to throw the first two or three out as buddies and business associates will line up to offer their reviews of how it gave them whiter teeth and fresher breath. Or enemies trying to undermine.

My total is now $120.60 but I am finished them now. I tried to register for the one today but it wouldn't let me play in it.

How different are practice money games to real money games? People on these practice tables seem to ready to throw away all their chips on a stupid hand. I had a guy call all in the other day on the last hand of a tourni with a 4 and 5 offsuit...

Exactly. So the answer is VERY DIFFERENT.

Are you saying you've never seen anyone make a similar play in a buyin tournament?

I've built my bankroll from freerolls and even though there are lots of reallt bad players at those tables it is a good way to learn, especially patience plus it will help with your BRM later on. When you've built your bankroll from hours and hours of freerolls you will definitely be more disciplined with your bankroll and think twice before moving up to levels you might not be ready for.

Regarding book tips David Sklansky's Theory Of Poker has really helped me out alot (even though I still have a great deal to learn ofc.)

GL!

I see your point, but it happens a lot more with practice games.

I just deposited $20 because i was bored earlier. Bonuses brought it up to $40. Already $3 down, which sucks. Guess i have to learn to stop playing and do something else when im not doing well.
