Hi !

I started to play poker in late December last year online and last month I have tried to go to few Qualification to Bigger tournaments in local casinos ( I have qualified like 35-40% of those I went to, but without cashing in main Tournament :( )... and have to say that there is a BIG difference between online and Live Poker.

Therefore I would like to ask more advance players > What would you recommend to concentrate more on Online or Live poker ???

I know playing online I get to play much more hands...but playing live is much more fun ...

Currently I do not have that much Time to do both and therefore I woudl welcome Your advice !!!

Thanx a lot !

I agree that live play can be more fun, but online poker is a great way to earn a profit and train for live games. For example, Bovada hand histories are face up (maybe other sites too by now, not sure), so you have an opportunity there to study and weed out mistakes while picking up on more advanced plays from the better players. Plus you can play cheap MTTs online and boost your bankroll when you run deep.

Overall I'd say it's best to focus your efforts online first, then add more live play when possible. There is a lot of variance in live games with low buyins ($60-$150) where lousy structures often force you into push\fold territory quickly. I'd rather buyin for much less online for a better structure, or pay a higher buyin live to get a decent structure and starting stack.

Until you start making meaningful amounts of money, play what you enjoy be it MTT or cash, live or online. That said, you may want to factor in other things e.g. online is much more convenient, the experiential value of seeing more hands in less time online, etc., etc. But how much you value such things is really up to you.

Play both and observe which sides profit you most in a given time, say for 2-3 months.

Then you can choose which game you will spend your time.

Good luck.

i would say if you want to learn the game and get better then online would be the way to go, more hands = more scenarios and experiences.

Just like what everyone else said, play online to start out with and transition into live play. Although I think that live play requires more reading the people at the table than playing your cards. You have to find the tells and that is almost impossible to do while playing online.

If you're looking to pick up the game stick to online for a while. Live poker is a completely different game in itself. Very fun, but very complex at the same time.

Good luck to you at the tables!

It is probably a good idea to gain experience in both online and live play. Being that you said you don't have much time to play poker in general, I'd say play online for now. Depending on where you live, you can jump onto a poker site at any time of the day or night and find a game going on (USA has less volume since the black friday fiasco of 2011 hence the "where you live" proviso). Not only that, online play is much faster than live play so you can get a game done and over with in two hours or less depending on the blind structure you decide on.

I think live poker has its benefits too: for example, you are forced to sit and contemplate a bit longer during each hand: so you may give more thought and mental attention to hands you play at a live table just by the nature of live versus online play. When you play online, you are often making decisions in an instant and so may not be dedicating enough grey matter to your online play.

And of course, when you play online you use a wealth of information about players that is simply not available when you play live. Many would say, however, that the opposite is true as well for live games (though in the case of online poker we are talking more player statistics while with live poker we are talking more player tells).

So it is probably a good idea to get some experience playing poker online and live. Of course, the future of poker does seem to be online so I wouldn't advise just playing live!

Would recommend online...it's much more convinient than live plus you can find just about any game at any time online...Online is a much better place to learn..and you don't need as much $ to play online rather than live

online or live poker

Online poker is the best for me because i get in and get out whenever i want in cash games and choose more tournaments, but still it is in your hand what you want to play.

Not an advanced player but I want to share my experience. I played serious live poker against strangers only twice so far and I remember thinking I was either terrible or incredibly unlucky. Now that I have been playing hundreds of online poker games per week, I better understand where I stand and how less important luck is on the long run, and as a bonus my own playing style is starting to take shape. I have decided to play online for at least a year before I go to a casino again (very accessible in my case).

IMO playing online is more convenient as you can play at the comfort of your home.Being comfortable is important as it can improve your game a lot.You are saying you dont have much time to spare then i would suggest you to play online cause you can play at the comfort of your home.Good luck at the table.

I think it all depends on your goals for poker. Is it going to be a way to add income or a way to have fun/relieve stress? If it is for income then I would suggest online because you can play so many more hands and that may be the one thing any poker play will agree on the best way to get better is to play more hand. With that being said if you are just looking to have some fun or a hobby of sorts I would go with what you enjoy playing more online or live...

it is much more difficult to play live
than online, especially if you're just not yet
I myself only on line. playing
My husband plays online and live
and said yourself that you have to play differently total
he prefers to go online to play
and my husband has been playing poker many years

so quiet start online and see what it says for a year

In my opinion if you want to learn more you should focus on online poker because you can get a larger sample of hands to study and play in less time. But i understand whhen you say live poker is funnier :)

This is a huge question and ultimately comes down to your personal goals. Do you want to have fun, or do you want to make money?

Both arenas, online and live, aren't mutually exclusive in that way in that one is 100% fun and the other is 100% winnings, but typically you can win more online and it sounds like you have more fun playing live.

More hands per hour, less travel time, no tips, and safety (on a regulated site) make online poker a no brainer in my opinion. You can realize the value of your skill quickly by playing tens of thousands of hands a month; whereas, the same amount of hands live would take you years to play through.

So if you're looking for money and a quicker learning curve, then play online if you have a safe place in mind. If you want to hang out and shoot the breeze and don't care about getting better at poker and taking it that seriously, then maybe live is best. But you can also get all that stuff at a bar as well after a 1 hour online session that gets you more hands :)

You can also temper in live sessions along with your online sessions. Occasionally, live games are so good that they beat out online games, but they have to be VERY good if you're playing lower stakes. You can't play 12 tables of 1/3 live for instance!
