What do you guys think is the best way to learn how to play poker? I think it is by getting a lesson in the basics by a good player and then simply playing. Please post what you think...

Practice honestly.
Obviously having input is great, with that acknowledged though I would say that its best to get in a lot of solo play.
Figure out who and what you are and want to be as a player and then learn what works and doesn't for the style that comes naturally to you.

I would have to say reading and experience with real money. Yes you can learn with fake money but people tend to play a little more ridiculous.

start with a little reading. I an not saying read a half dozen poker books, just look around a site like this and understand what everyone means, what the concepts are.

how you apply it, though, is entirely dependent on the player, and there is no substitute for practice. nobody plays seriously for play money, or early on in freerolls.

If you do not yet want to dive in the waters of playing for money but want to get a solid basis, my best suggestion is to observe tables of people that are playing with real money, and really dig into the decisions each player is making. yes, not seeing many of the actual cards makes it hard, put it is probably the closest thing you can get without putting money in.

freerolls aren't bad if you make it past the first half hour to and hour.

Can I learn to play poker on their own? It should be noted immediately that in order to learn how to play poker, it is necessary to make certain efforts that go far beyond mere acquaintance with the rules. However, the pleasure of knowing that your professionalism in this interesting game is growing, and with it grows and your self-esteem, and your well-being, without a doubt, is worth all the effort.
Most of those for whom the stage of "learning how to play poker" has long passed, familiarity with the game are advised to begin with the study of literature. Such literature in abundance can be found on the Internet.
One option for those who want to learn how to play poker - find a mentor. Such a person may be someone from friends, a good game of poker, or just a good player, which you can find on the Internet.
A very useful step in self-education for those who want to learn to play poker, video games will be viewing the professionals - like video easy enough to find on the network, especially after a major poker tournament. It is the analysis of games will allow professionals to acquire a range of useful skills that can be very useful in the game.
The development of theoretical knowledge must necessarily be combined with practice. If your friends share your passion for poker, should be possible to play with them as much as possible. However, of great importance not only to the number of games played, but also a variety of rivals: the long game with the same opponents is not conducive to the development of the necessary flexibility for successful game.
As they say, those who have dedicated poker most of his life, a good poker player, no one is born, they become. Learn to play poker can anyone show some perseverance, desire to learn new things and remembering that temporary setbacks were all those who are now on top of the world of poker glory. Thank you for your attention. :)

I don't believe watching pros play will make you a good player in the beginning. Generally when starting out you don't play at pro stakes so the mind set is completely different. If learning to play HE one should start at the basic levels, 2NL and micro MTT/SNG. To me the most important thing needed to learn poker and working towards being profitable is patients. It will take hundreds of thousands of hands to get the situational awareness needed to be consistently profitable.

Interesting answers. I think practicing is a strong answer. I also think practicing with a good player who tells you tips as you go is even better

For me I read a few books and watched my share of videos,it gave me a better understanding of what I was doing and what other players where doing ,my and other players mistakes,I guess what I'm trying to say it gave me a kinda of a reference point, instead of trying to learn it by just playing, which if I didn't read or watch a video I would have not had a clue to why and I'd just keep making the same mistake till I finally realized that's something stupid that I keep doing, best way to learn is by learning from someone else's experiences!

I find that watching poker may not be a good teaching / learning tool because you never see all the hands that get folded

yes but you get to see numbers of hands how people play bet etc.. I found that watching made me more diverse trying things have seen as application tactics so has helped.

Nothing is better than playing the more you play the more I hope you learn.

Different methods of learning suit different people, such as books or videos or poker training sites.

I actually found that playing freerolls and play money games gave me bad habits, which I then had to unlearn when I started playing for real money.

A combination of playing microstakes, reading books, watching videos, asking questions here and playing the CC freerolls is helping me to improve.

You want to play every day. Only with experience comes understanding games. Watch for their opponents. annotate. And you will do it.

There is no absolute best way. Different people are oriented toward learning in different ways; e.g. auditory learners vs visual learners. Also, some people are better at learning from being instructed while others are learn better by trial and error.

Best Way to Learn Poker is to Play and Read

You can start out by reading every book you can get your hands on this will give you an idea of strategy. Then Just keep playing the more you play the more you get a feel for the game. Especially if your playing online you need to study the MATH that is the MOST IMPORTANT ASPECT.
