Hi
What is a good starting hand for Omaha H/L?

A-A-2-3 double suited is considered the best starting hand.

Other very good double suited starting hands include
A-A-2-4
A-A-2-5
A-A-3-4
A-A-3-5
A-A-2-2

Very good single suited starting hands
A-A-2-3
A-A-2-4

Very good non suited starting hands
A-A-2-3

There are many other playable starting hands, but to start the ball rolling, I have only listed the best.

I don’t think there are any tournaments with that buy in. But, if you mean cash games then forget it. I take it from your questions and comments you are a beginner. Omaha Hi Lo is one of the hardest pokers games to master.

I suggest the following.
Read the strategy article here on Cardschat.
1. Select “Strategy Articles” on the main menu above.
2. Select “Omaha”
3. Select “Ultimate Limit Omaha High Low Guide”

After reading the “Introduction to Omaha Poker/Basic Omaha Poker Rules”, then
1. Select and read “How to play Omaha Poker: Preflop”
2. Select and read “How to play Omaha Poker: The Flop & Beyond”
3. Select and read “How to play Omaha Poker: Scooping the Pot”

I hope that helps, and good luck.

If you want to make a small investment, I highly recommend Ray Zee's poker book on High/Low Split (covers Omaha AND Stud variants). You're going to learn so much from this classic poker book.

Brgds

I think the minimum sit and go Omaha H/L is for $1.

An option for you to consider, is the special event freerolls that Cardschat organize. Last year there were three that included Omaha H/L.

200,000 Member Celebration (Feb-Mar)
Twelve different types of games of which one was Omaha H/L.
Also included were 8 Game and HORSE (which have Omaha H/L levels)
and a Pot Limit Omaha game.

Decathlon Series (Jun-Jul)
Ten games similar to above.

October Spook Fest - Halloween (Oct)
Again, similar to above.

They were a lot of fun and also some very good players to test your skill against. I'm not sure when the next one will be, so keep an eye on the "CardsChat Special Events & real money Tournaments Forum" under "Our Events".

Good luck.

I like AK23 probably more than AA23. Lots of times an Ace will show up , so you are sitting there with three Aces and lose a lot of money to a straight or flush when no low shows up.
The AK really helps if there is no low.

AA23. Because with this you can get a high hand or possibly the lowest. Lol

Omaha H/L starting hands

If you're wanting to play for Low hand in Omaha H/L, here's what I would suggest.

Pre-flop

  1. Try playing for high hand instead. Low hand should be a nice afterthought.
  2. If you're going to play for low hand, you can play "Ace low" meaning you have to have an ace and one other low card (5 or lower). Only playing for A23 isn't going to give you enough experience for playing low hand.
  3. Or you can play "2/3" which means you have the 2 and the 3 and are hoping an ace with other low cards hit the board When everyone else is playing ace low and the ace comes you can have them crushed for low hand.
  4. Never raise pre-flop hoping you'll hit low hand. Too often there is no low hand, so just don't do it unless you also have a decent high hand.

After the flop

  1. Do NOT bet with 4 to a low hand. Again, low hands don't come up often enough for that to hit well. And, you could get counterfeited if one of your low cards is the one that hits the board.
  2. Don't get into raising wars just because you have the "nut" low hand (such as A2368 where you hold A2). Most people play for low hand, so there is always a good chance you will split the pot. And you don't want to have put 10000 chips into a pot only to get back just 7500 because someone else has high hand and you had to split low hand with someone else.
  3. Always be aware of getting counterfeited. If you have A3 and an A is on the board, do remember that everyone gets to use that Ace for low hand. So even though you may have been well ahead, someone else who needed the ace for their low hand could have you beat.

Hi thanks fore the advice.
2. It happened to me in one of the games, i had A2345, and went all in, one guy took the high pot and 3 of us split the low pot I ended up wit at smaller stack than i started with.

Love the advice Jonathan. Good question Anders. I really struggled with Omaha until I really took a look and studied starting hands. There are some good videos that are free on youtube that offer starting hand breakdowns. I recommend searching those.

How are you getting along with your Omaha Hi Lo games?.

I had about half an hour to spare and remembered your question, so tried a $0.02/$0.04 Limit Omaha H/L cash game on pokerstars. They accepted my $1.00 buy-in, but you may be able to buy-in for even less.

Probably a better option than tournaments, while learning. If you stick to the limit cash games, with a small buy-in, you should not get into too much trouble.

But the way, I got a royal flush while playing.

Yesterday i found the Pot limited Omaha H/L on Pokerstars. I tried to play a few hand and it came along very nicely. I took 2 $ to the table and played like 15 minutes and left with 3,14 $. Basically i won on AA25. All In .:) After that i had to take a break to calm down.

One Omaha H/L tip I can give you is to not raise your low hands in multiway pots. The reason is you want to keep as many people in the pot as possible since you are only playing for half the pot and will be quatered a good percentage of the time.

You only want to go crazy raising if you have nut/nut which is best high and low possible. Having the best high hand is ok to re-raise in multiway since you aren't going to be quartered.

Omaha H/L is a fun game but just like PLO it is a high variance game so be careful with BRM, you want to be extra rolled.

Well done.

You can go broke very quickly with Pot Limit Omaha H/L. Don't be fooled by the Pot Limit Stakes of $0.01/$0.02 against the Limit Stakes of $0.02/$0.04. The Limit Stakes looks twice as much, but each round of betting is limited.

Limit Omaha H/L ($0.02/$0.04) is a lot easier for a beginner and the standard of play is generally weaker than Pot Limit. Also, I doubt if you would need to take a break to calm down after a win. lol.

Hell!! Pot Limit Omaha H/L is a bit like being thrown into the deep end of a swimming pool, at five years of age vs a paddling pool.

Agree :)

I will check out Limit Omaha.

Today I vent into the room with 1 $, the plan was to double or loose the dollar. After 15 min i left with 2,04 $ So far so good.:)

PLO8 is my best game... play as tight as possible when blinds get high..

On early levels mix it up... try playing mid/high double suited connectors... pairs...

Hands like

2-3-T-T
4-5-T-9
3-5-8-8
2-4-K-J

If this hands are double suited go for it,if action gets too heavy and you are holding a low flush or sucker straight... try to fold, making big hands in Omaha8 is easy, and you have to tighter post flop when you are not holding the nuts.

A2 are always nice preflop hand in Omaha Hilo, but I love to start with higher kickers and pairs to chase hi-pot and take full prize
