I know a fish is someone who is a bad player, but how do you identify a fish, are there multiple kinds of fish, and just how do you exploit them for a big payday?

The old poker adage is "if you don't recognize the fish at your table" then guess what?

lol........... Yes.... you are da fish

But seriously, not sure about mid level stakes on recognizing a fish, beside all the obvious traits of being a POW (pay off wizard).

IMHO, it probably is easier if you played on micro buy-ins to spot these types of players.
Hopefully someone here will have more insight into your question.

Good luck in your fish hunting.

the player bluffs a lot, others wait for a good hand and then take the chips from him

A fish is the opposite of sharks. on the tables there are the players who play poorly and make obvious mistakes and there are those waiting to take all your chips at the right moment. they make you believe that your aggression is legit and will fold or sometimes give you a few chips. don't be fooled by them. these are the sharks. the ones that will eat all your chips. the ones that give you the option "Rebuy" very often.

Yeah, usualy they bet, when they have nothing and hide, when they hit the flop.Once pot/comitted, they don't have a clue but c-betting is always good.
But honestly, I don't understand it either, because something told them, it was their hand...:joyman:You may be impressed by them sometimes, because they made it to the bubble with almost the same stack that you have EARNED.
They will not make a difference, it is just their day... they know their cards must come one day.

To answer your question... call the flop bet, check on turn and bet on river is exploiting a lot!
Never bet all streets. Make a break and you will know!Check-raise and they run!

I think a good, experienced player is a fish. When the blanks grow, you have to become a fish. I do not think a fish is a bad player.

Fish will play out of position regularly, some min-raise or limp often and call/push draws on any street, some have strange bet sizing, or just don't know how to bet.

Most fish do not care what type of player you are, all they can see are the cards dealt to them.
The only way to play against them is by reading them, fish will tend to make themselves easy to read.

But they have read 3 poker articles:

1. be aggressive
2. If you didn't hit the flop, your opponent may neither (counts for fishes up to 4 opponents and he will bet anyway)
3. The button is the best position, always bet on the button. Fish thinks on the button chances are better for HIS cards to come.

In short terms... just as we both played 6 months ago:stupido:

A fish is obviously a bad player .. after a few minutes at the table you can realize who the villains are a fish ... the first symptom is that they play many hands .. another symptom is the way they place their bets. .. and finally pay all bets raised without any logical criteria ...!

A fish is a new player that does not know how the game is played if they are ahead or if they are behind. Common mistakes include betting into pre-flop raiser with weak hands. Not watching table action, not being mindful of position, calling 3-bets pre light, putting 25% of stack in to see flop then folding, etc. Don't try and bluff them.

In my opinion there are 3 kind of fishes, that one bluffs overly, that one pays overly and that one folds overly. All don't know read, It is easy to read them or it doesn't matter what they have, inthe long run hero wins in the most of times.

Look for a VPiP of 25%+. Usually it's alot more.. With a pre flop raise of 0-5%. These are the passive laggy types you want to look for.

I think some of the comments here are confusing fish with donk, lol. From my experience of being called a fish, ha, ha, it's when you chase for straights and flushes or even float for overcards so basically it's hoping to get ahead when your behind. You are "fishing" for a hand...

A fish is a gill-bearing aquatic craniate animal that lack limbs with digits according to google.

At the poker table stupid people call each other fish none of these people have a clue what it is or what they are doing at a poker table.

Good poker players do not use the term fish.

A fish is someone who does not really know how to play poker well. Usually, the fish loses a big amount of money because he/she would call you with anything or was not able to play the hand well. Be careful because when the fish hits something, it is hard to make them fold.
A Fish is an unskilled poker newbie who plays many hands out of position and regardless to what opponent he is facing on that hand and calls big raises chasing a Miracle card on the turn or the river. An other fishy behaviour is their attitude to show-off either a bluff or a good hand you don't have to call for showdown they will show it .

You could find more details on how to spot them partypoker articles https://www.partypoker.com/how-to-play/school/advanced/tips/spot-a-fish.html

Why is fish a bad player? This is a great food caught in the water and fried on fire. The fish also has a head with eyes and even a tail. Did you know about this sensation?:D:D:D:p:D:D:D

the fish may be the one who doesnt see the danger when it is evident .. you may can have AA and be a fish because you are paying a flush where you will obviously lose ... you may can have a top pair and pay a set like a fish .. There are many situations that differentiate a fish and a good player .. every day i think we all make about 10 mistakes or less per tournament .. what you have to trynt to do the fish mistakes ... pay large amounts without having nuts(or something very good?). Being intimidated by rivals constantly is also a good player to know how to put a stop to these players who try to be aggressive but who can actually be fishes re-raising for fun. U need many hours of play to see these situations come and avoid making costly mistakes.
