Sometimes, I wonder which is harsher.

When I lose 10 buy-ins in sngs, eh, no big deal because I can make that up soon and I know it as long as I know I'm a player who have been profiting at the stake.

When I lose 10 buy-ins in cash games, it just tilts the shit out of me and frustrates me a lot. feels like a very harsh blow. gets discouraging to play sometimes. Feels like it'll take a long time to profit 10 buy-ins.

When I lose 10 buy-ins in mtt, not as harsh as cash games but still feels like a huge blow to me.

anyone know the reason behind it or are all the downswings the same and my perception is just weird?

In terms of what will actually give you the biggest swings it will be the MTTs. The more players, the bigger money and the more difficult it will be to cash.

Psychologically I would also say cash games give you the harshest swings, because you have no idea how much you will win or lose in a session. In tournis or sngs you have your buyin and you know if you lose you lose the buyin. Cash games are much more unpredictable.

I would say cash games by far...Rush Poker in particular!

As Ryan just mentioned, with a tournament you know your potential loss going in and have it committed before you see your first card.

In a cash game, even low or micro stakes, you can drain an entire bank roll in the time it would take to complete just one tournament.

The most dramatic swings both up and down happen in a cash game. The tournament offers you the chance of a strong up swing with a limited but guaranteed hit to your roll.

I guess it wasn't just me. Cash games are really painful when facing a downswing. I enjoyed the responses that logically show why cash games and mtts are the harshest in downswings compared to sngs.

the most painful is the one that lasts longer. for example i have been on a downswing on mtts forever, i have like a few hundred games, and i am down at least 200 dollars playing 1$ and 2$ buyin.

or maybe, i just suck at mtts man, who knows.

I would say cash games. Like stated above with MTT's ans STG you you have a set stake in each game. Yes you can buy into another one but the whole trying to stay in helps keep some plays that you might do in a cash game to a min or at least that is how it is for me. I am a loser at cash but a winner at MTT and STG.

Agree MTT variance is worse.Probably because there are so many more loose players who can roll you after you carefully build a nice chip stack.

In cash games you can choose to leave if loose players appear to dominate the game, whereas during an MTT you have no choice.

If after a couple of circuits I find have a LAG or calling station on my left I leave the table.

The LAG will keep raising you and you can't steal from a calling station.:jd4:

I think you realize it is hard to cash in MTT's, so if you don't, no big deal. However, you expect to beat the cash games most times so when you don't-it's frustrating.

cash games can really burn your britches. Especially if you have small BR and play at the micro tables. Too many of your opponents think that since its just a dollar or 2 they will shove or call anything to double or triple up. they dont play poker, they play bingo

Cash games losses really hurt me the most. I think it is because most of the time I just seem to lose and keep on losing whether through bad play or getting sucked out on. If I buy in to SNG or MTT then I know up front what I am losing and it seems to take the sting out of it for me.

I play mainly STT and MTT's cos although I go on
bad runs, in STT a downswing of 10 is common, as
long as you have the BR for the stakes you play you
should be ok

But with cash games I find the downswing far worse
cos losing 10 buy ins like it does to you, tilts me to
hell, even when I have got the BR

I find downswings, in all forms of poker are, to me
a vicious circle cos when I am on a downswing my
poker suffers and so my downswing goes on and
my poker suffers and so on

we all know when he are on a downswing it cant last forever
but when you are in it it sure seems to

PLO SuperTurbo SNG

Well, of course, it'll depend on whether it's superturbo, turbo, regular for sngs, and for cash games, whether it's shallow, cap, regular, deepstack, rush and for mtts, all of the above options + other types such as knockout, cashout, rebuy, etc. I was talking about general between sngs, mtts, and cash games. Kinda hard to be specific for some reason.

Given those, I would still think cash game downswing is the harshest to me. Like many people mentioned here, you don't know how much you're gonna lose when you play cash games while in mtt and sngs, you know your potential losses going in. And mtts, u can recover ur downswing through one good run for a huge upswing and sngs, each win will profit u 3-4 buy-ins, but cash games, u don't get those type of upswings, making me feel like i'm climbing a mountain when i have to recover my downswing in cash games.
