Mostly a holdem player myself, I stick to the tournaments. I'd never play no limit holdem as a cash game, just not my flavor, plus I just dont think I can win consistently enough for it to actually make me money in the long run as a cash game because I cant afford to purchase enough utility. The game just isnt equal when someone has 20 bucks and I have about 4 bucks. Im really only willing to play pennies as cash.
But im wondering... is it possible that other variants generally work better as a cash game? I almost feel like holdem was designed for tournament play. But between tournaments I feel that some sort of pot limit variant cash game is something worthwhile. I could earn my buy ins to tournaments possibly.
So far ive been expirimenting with seven card stud pot limit. I dont win with it very much yet, but it sure is a blast! It really requires so much more focusing of my attention and concentration. It requires so much processing and for some odd reason its so much more entertaining this way.
Anyways.. what do you all think? What is the best for slow steady bank roll building as a cash game? Limit or no limit and what variant?

If you study the games you'll be ahead of a lot of the players in the field. I've played quite a lot of Omaha 8, razz and stud as cash games and done quite well out of it. It also opens up new perceptions for you for when you play other games.

I learned poker by playing stud and draw poker. Stud requires quite a bit more attention especially board reading skills. I think you play any game better if you have been exposed to more than one game.

I would say it depends on what game your most confident in. I find trying new formats tend to increase your concentration not because it's harder, but because your outside your comfort zone rather than being relaxed. In order to build a bankroll, you must have at least a sizable amount you will respect and pad you from fatal soul crushing variance if you happen to run bad. For tournament poker you need about 60/100 buyins for sngs you need about 40+ buyins and for today's cash games I like to have 70+ buyins , but for most 25-30 will be fine.

There's an Amarillo Slim book that (can't remember the title) gives quite a good insight into other variants.

Studying other variant is good. It gives you other alternatives for game selection.

It also give insights on strategies on that particular variant which might not be suited for other variants.

7 card stud is good. PLO is good too but the variance is higher than Holdem.
