Three of a kind is three of a kind, isn't it. Not true!
There is a subtle difference between trips and a set,
If you have a pocket pair and a third card of your pair appears in the flop, you have a set. The beauty of a set is that it is well disguised, hidden in an innocent looking flop. Only one player can have a set.
If one of your pocket cards matches a pair on the flop you have trips. The danger with trips is that another player may have the same pocket card and make trips. It then comes down to who has the best kicker.

The other danger with trips is that your opponent might have a set himself (and likely does have if he is betting against probable trips). If he has a set, then he has a full house (his set plus your pair).
