Building from freeroll winnings is hard, and you have to get a little lucky in the beginning. Most people are going to suggest you buy in for the max right away, but is think that is a bad idea unless you are playing a half stack table. Wait to play 100+bb until you have a little experience in cash games. There is a definite learning curve, and you do not want to lose you roll in one day. Try buying in for 60-80bb at first. If you play a tight aggressive style with this amount you make speculative hands vs you unprofitable for your opponents. You should also feel less stress when you lose because it is a smaller portion of your bank roll.

You can start right out playing with your $5. Just wait until you have 20+full buy-ins for the next level before you move up. Take your time. It is really important you do not get in a hurry to move up. You will go broke if you try to rush it.

FYI low buy in sit n go's are super soft, and a great way to grow a tiny bank roll.

Main difference of cash over tournament is the blinds. The blinds increase for tourneys while cash is steady. From there, you have to adjust strategy for each.

With that tiny bankroll I would advise to play in cash on play money chips while you earn real money in freerolls. At least 40-50 bucks.

It is always good to have at least 100 big blinds when entering a cash game. I struggle with my game when I flip flop between tournament to cash games. I didn't realize how different the mind set is between the two. In tournament poker, you only get one shot, and often find yourself in an uncomfortable situation, where you have to risk it all. If I play a tournament before I play cash, I still find myself with that all in mentality. Tournament poker there, you have to get lucky, several times to be able to place in the top 5 percent of your field. I am a firm believer that skill comes more into play in cash games.
