How should I be altering my game when I play tournaments? people seem to go all in with marginal hands pre-flop all the time and I don't understand it. When I play microstakes cash games $2NL it doesn't seem as volatile as when I enter a tournament.

Is there a general strategy?

It all depends on what kind of tournaments you play, what size is the buying for registration. On freerolls there is always a special skill of the game.

Cash we have all the time to expect good hands, in tournaments that have to expand the range of hands for the increase of blinds. Quite often in tournaments play aggressively the good hands.
That's how I play them.

i don't alter or change my way of play whether i play free rolls or buy into tournaments. Some players seem to think since it is a free roll they think they aren't losing. The opportunity they are losing out on is developing their skills and strategies.

Cash games are far different from tournament play. in a cash games they might call a big bluff if they are unsure cause they can.. in a tourney they have to be right or they get eliminated and in most cases will fold the hand they would call with in a cash game. I like the 1 life dynamics of tourneys.

Tournaments at their core are a series of short stacked battles - those who know what ranges of cards they should be playing and how to pick up chips without massive hands are those who have the most success in the long-run. There is a lot of luck involved because there is less room to maneuver and the blinds get so high you have to get lucky to run deep. Volume is key, if you lose a tournament online you can always hop right into another one.

In my experience cash games are deep stacked battles where you fling money at each other and see who has the most stuck to them at the end of the night (lol). There is more play in cash games, since you can make moves and get folds from people, so this is usually the more skill-based of the two.

Very different skills are needed to be successful at each game, so most people specialize in one or the other (or are mediocre at both).

Good luck to you! :D

You got tournament players and cash game players. I'm more a tournament player, instead of cash game player. Tournament: play micro stacks abc and tight and you should be fine. Around the bubble, just let it go and get your money.

In tournaments and cash games there is no overall strategy. Success in tournaments is achieved through aggressive play. In the cash game, the role of aggression decreases and the role of skill increases.

Tournaments and caches are completely different strategy games. In tournaments I have more hands on the flop.

If youre more skilled in Tournaments, so better keep on playing in thems. You can start to play in micro buy-in tourneys, not just freerolls.

I prefer tournaments, but lately I'm trying to switch to cash. Tournaments usually take more than 1 hour. And since usually the time of my game is night, it causes inconvenience. I'm not always ready to fight before dawn to get the prize money.

In tournaments you have to play at the beginning very tight. You have to classify your opponent to know with which range you can play against him. But from 10-AA and Ako-Aqo, Aks-Ajs. That means your best 5% at the beginning and after all you can be more agressive and call your best 10-15% of your hands. Cash-Game you play constant, but tournament is more dynamic.
