I also would suggest to start with freerolls and stop depositing for a while. Depositing is interesting, when you know you are a winning player and you want to achieve some bonusses with this.
I think there is no reason to blame a poker room for giving a poor player at the river his trips with his small pockets. It can happen at any room. Your example just shows that villain plays kinda fishy.
I guess books also depend on what kind of game you play.
Books from Harrington are kinda classics. Very nice to read.
But for tourneys I also liked this one:

About videos I liked some from Splitsuit Sweeny, altough he is more a cash player. But I guess there are a lot more.
