Find a poker friend. Review hands and discuss the game together. Often.

Books, training videos, forum posts... all helpful, but you will go further with a trusted friend, and more quickly.

If you don't know anybody personally that plays, post ads looking for a study buddy, befriend others in forums, whatever you have to do.

It's been the best thing I've ever done poker wise. Despite all the headaches I had along the way trying to find someone!

Hand selection: When you begin to play, the most important thing is to fold all the junk preflop. Does that QT look good to you on SB against a raiser? Don't do it! Just toss it away.

Fold: Don't be that guy who calls preflop with 89 offsuit and then calls three post-flop bets after you flop a pair of 9s.

Position: Play more hands from BTN or CO. Do not over defend your blinds. Tighten up the more you are away from the BTN.

Aggression: If you have a strong hand, raise raise raise. Don't slowplay unless you have a huge hand. Think at least a flopped set with no obvious draws at least. Don't be that guy who flops top pair, tries to "trap", bets small on the turn, and then calls off the whole stack on the river when he gets check raised, and then calls villain a "donk."

Attention: Pay attention to your opponents. Try to detect patterns. The correct play against one villain isn't necessarily the correct play against another. Use a hand tracker if possible.

As you get more familiar with the game and get better at situation/villain reading, then you can start to mix things up.

and then they complain about how pocket kings and aces don't hold up :D .

Best advice? Stop chasing, stop playing bad cards, and stop bluffing people you know are going to call you.

Try to avoid thinking that you're entitled to win the pot if you had the best hand pre-flop. Having this problem will both tilt you and cost you a lot of chips post-flop if you can't fold your big hands no matter what happens after the cards fall.

Also, catching a small piece of the flop doesn't justify calling off your whole stack, flopping bottom pair isn't the nuts and neither is a draw.

Playing weak Aces from early position: I see people get into a lot of trouble thinking hands like A3, A4 are strong hands in early position but they're a lot weaker than they look. The issue here is that if you raise in EP with these, you're likely to only get called by better Aces and if there's an Ace on the board, you're on the way to losing all your chips.

Propane hit this one right on the head. Big hole cards are nice but the picture can change radically.

Patience is also a highly needed skill.....

Learn Mathematics of NL Hold'em (no, pot/implied odds are not enough) and always remember: "Money saved is money earned".

The sooner you start to think about why you're taking an action instead of just what to do, the better.

Study - read forums, read books, if you're playin a live game and get knocked out early, sit there (if you can) and watch the game. Pay attention to the players and how they play both their cards AND their positions.

Try as hard as you can to disconnect from the personal, subjective view of any hand you get involved with and try like hell to view it objectively. i.e. pretend you are railing the hand.

Play tight, dont hurry and dont chase for the hand.
Patience is the key.
Read literature, watch videos and past hands, and listen to others experience.

Great advice here already; I especially love the tips by blueskies and Arj.

I would just add:

1. Until you master the fundamentals of T/A, leave the fancy tricks to the experts.

2. It's ok to fold.

3. Forget everything you've seen on TV about bluffing.

Don't play if your tired , drunk or both.
If you get bored, get up. Don't play hands out of position or just because you want to be in a hand.
Don't have the opinion that " it's only 10 bucks". I love to play against these type of players. They lose and spout off " it's ok it's only $20" . I say please stick around and play some more.
Also, A/K is a good hand but can sometimes turn out like playing 7/4. I have seen many people overplay this beautiful hand.

Tip 1: Being patient and playing tight/agressive takes you to the top.

Tip 2: In MTT, you just should see the flop between 15%-20% of the times. It means, the most of the times you should do FOLD and FOLD and FOLD and FOLD again. In my opinion, the FOLD is the best friend of succeful players.

I hope that helps you.

Remember where the FOLD Button is.
NB# Start thinking Ahead.....As Arjonuis said think about your actions,
I mean your future actions on every hand. After you have made your decision Call ,raise...What will you do .....if Villain reraises, calls or pushes?
Try and have a plan for all these actions. Have the plan ready before you make the decision.

Only play with money you can afford to lose without it affecting you either financially, mentally or emotionally.

As part of this, don't worry too much about losing your entire roll. This doesn't mean it's okay to ignore BRM. It does mean not to think that losing your BR is a disaster. After all, per the above, if you were honest with yourself, you should be unaffected, just minus a few bucks that don't matter.
