I have studied the play of multiple people that end up high in the league (top 20) and found that most of them play extremely slow, they use their full 8 seconds of thinking, like that they avoid early busts and a loss of points (I know it's boring to just wait to act). The reason is that they are much more likely to get quite deep in the tournament, not extremely deep though, but enough to make points every time. They will be the shortstack of the table the majority of the time, but it is ok, because they are not playing for the win, just for the points, and because of the gradual scale of points, this seems to be the best way.
Also, do not bluff! It is still a freeroll where they are going to call you with any hand, so there is a big time to lose some points. Only play premium hands and be patient.

JOINING partner a nice pot at the beginning of the tournament is crucial and this is right up with very strong hands

I agree with Abramo Della Luce that this could be some strategy, i didn't try ones because you should be very focused to play that slow. At start of tournament I try to play very TAG - tight, and aggressive when there's only 1 or 2 players in the pot. So I try to play minimum hands and hopefully with minimum players so that i can make first break after hour of play when there's only approximately about 1/4 players left from the start of tournament.
In the middle stage (after first brake) you shoud be more aggressive when you had a ''hand'' so don't be afraid to play in that hand and if you hit some monster you must shove or call all in (2be or not2be).
After that .... it's all up to you. ;):)

P.S. After posting this I could tell you - you should play every tournament like that lolol
