Hi everyone, this is my first post. Ive been playing mainly free online poker for a year or so after learning to play with a few colleagues after work. For the last year I didnt really think of strategy at all but after playing in a little 25 people 15£ buy in tournament at my local cricket club I realised the difference in players and wanted to improve. Im starting to read about and get some information. Ive been playing live every night with two friends for a few pounds a night.I plan to play a little online for small cash eventually, just casually. But for now I just want to learn how to be a better player. I just wondered what the best thing to do for someone who knows how to play but wants to improve and become better. I hope this is in the righr place and apologies its long.

1. Read a book about the game you are playing, probably Texas Hold'Em.
2. Read another book about the type of game you want to play, ring or tournament.
3. Learn terms such as "pot odds" and "outs", "on the button" and "gutshot". Things that have names are generally an area to focus in any game or sport.
4. Play with a Hold'Em calculator. What's a better starting hand, heads up: AK or 98? 98 or 22? AK or 22? Play with a calculator and find out for yourself.

The best way to improve the game is playing and analyzing the games played. But poker is very complex because it deals with emotions, sometimes I'm playing safely making good moves and my chips will all to the table with air. but as I said play and analyze games at least the technical part will improve. Good luck and welcome

"I'm a firm believer in learning the game by playing the game." Phil Ivey

I totally agree with Phil, the only way to get good at poker is to play. I would read as much as I could (unlimited free resources with the internet), but you have to play.

Read about being a TAG player, then implement for a session. Read about being a LAG player, then implement for a session. Then learn about c-bets, aggression, position, ect.. and keep adding to your "tool box" to find what works with your personality, how to recognize what type of players you are playing against, and what are the weakness with that style.

This will lead to you playing "your game" which is your own personal style somewhere between LAG and TAG.

If i talk to every begginer poker player, I would say: 1 - study a couch, 2 - read how many books you could, 3 - Have a bankroll management, 4 - have a mindset management.

Hi rossbayes and welcome to Cardschat. I totally agree with karl coakley and there is no need for me to repeat what everyone here has said, except for the fact that playing is going to be your best teacher There is a couple things I want to add. First of all, since we all agree about how important playing is, you need to focus on getting into the Freeroll Club. That will give you freerolls to play while you are learning. Click on Calendar at the top and you will see what freerolls you will be able to play. If I'm not mistaken, if you are not a US player, you will have a lot to pick from every day. Here are two links to things you need to read.

Here are somethings that are (have to have) to become a good player, or you should give up now. There are some WHY questions you should ask about these things, and you need them answered by more members than just me. First of all, you will need a lot of patience while playing, and while you are learning. Second, you need to work on staying focused while you play. Third, you need confidence in yourself, and that take a positive attitude. We all have our negative attitudes, so just don't play during those times, or be ready to lose some money. Forth, and this should have been at the top of this list, Work harder on any TILT problem you may have than any of the others. Once you can put anything that may cause you to tilt, behind you, all the others will come to you. Bad Beats will come your way, just like they do us all. How you deal with them can wreck your game, or make it stronger. Last of all, take the advice you get here to your tables and try it. If some things work, keep using it, if some things don't work, don't use it, but don't throw it in the muck. Write it down on a pad you should keep in front of you at all times. Ok I'm done and I'm sure you are glad. GL

Things to work on

I've found that playing a lot of poker will improve your game as well. Nothing wrong with practice, especially when it's not for a lot of money. For myself, I refuse to put money online and play donkey poker, so I play a lot of live tournaments and cash games now. In the beginning I played a lot of free pub poker for practice. This enabled me to practice my bluffing and slow playing skills. Good luck to you.
