So I always considered a whale just a really big fish, like the type of player HEM2 auto rates players as whale. I was told that there can not be a "whale" in a freeroll, because they are only players that lose lots of money at the casino. I always just assumed it was a real bad player. How do you define it?

A whale is not good or bad. A whale is so rich and willing to gamble, casinos will give rooms meals...anything to get them to come and stay at that casino.
A casino knows if a player stays and plays, the casino has the edge and a whale is likely to win or lose a lot...more likely lose.

A whale is just a bad player with really deep pockets.

So, think of a fish that is willing to gamble anything and money is of no concern to them at the tables.

Yeah, that's why I don't like rebuy tournaments. These tournaments are usually a waste of time and money for me because of people that often go all in with nothing and then win.

A whale is a loose player that is willing to drop +10BIs in the game and does it often. Typically they like to straddle, blind bet from UTG, make big bluff bets into small raggedy flops (ie bet $50 into a $8 pot with a board of :10c4: :7d4: :2s4: at $200NLH), play very trappy, etc.
