I go by their betting tendencies and how aggressive they play.
It can take years to get it right, but it will end up becomi g second nature.

There are several tells you can pick up on especially if you're playing against the same player(s). Since I primarily play on ACR, ACR has a player note section and I use it all the time to keep notes on the players I see regularly and who give off certain information. Some of the tells I've seen are with betting size, such as betting 5x the big blind and the player shows Aces or Kings. Another tell I've seen is the player who re-raises over the top all-in. That's an indication he's holding a premium hand and he wants everyone to fold so he can get heads up. Then there's the flat call from middle position, and then there's the player who takes a long time to make a decision. Most of the time when that player bets he's been thinking about how to get the most value out of his hand. Another one is the player who goes all in on the river at the microstakes. Most players don't bluff at that level so I am usually putting them on a good hand.

There are no tells in MTTs you literally have a bazillion different types of players and it's shocking how differently or strangely a hand can get played. If you want to learn how to play different spots though and the math, as well as situations where it's smart for your opponent to bluff it's helpful to watch good poker players play and how they think. Jcarverpoker and tonkaaaap are too of my favorites! Jcarver is streaming the 100k buy-in today with Jason Mercier! Should be great!

i also take notes -one thing i note is villians opening raise range from variuos positions-what they will raise with and how much is priceless-one thing to remember about taking notes-on the ppl you face alot you must keep notes current as villians style of play changes,or they get better

also, long delay on several hands could indicate that they are playing multiple tables.

instant raise (faster than human) indicates raise all/raise any button which is usually a strong hand, depending on your read over several hands.

Agreed. Also if you notice the the player on your left is instafolding in the BB always minraise if it is folded to you in the SB.

betting patterns!!!!! use the notes feature to keep track when hands go to showdown.

Also, and I'm guilty of this, people that multi-table will often click the "check/fold" button if they're uninterested resulting in an extremely quick check from that player if it's checked to them. More often than not, you can bet and that player will fold. HOWEVER, be cautious, b/c sometimes it can be a trap.

Mark, are you short of a few posts to make up the numbers? I cannot believe this was a serious thread. There are no tells online. You cannot see the player's face, his hand action or his body language. A good online player will have you so confused with his play, that you won't know if your ass is punched, bored or countersunk.

betting patterns are easiest tells online poker to me. Is like everyone went to same school of betting. Is some really easy reads on unset up bets on river etc.. that is easiest to read. But is also same amounts etc.. and the dreaded auto play feature. Now i play multiple mtts at once. So sometimes to keep up put the check button on etc.. Doesnt mean will not evaluate your bet. The biggest thing will say people bet check without continuation and think that hurts a ton of players who should throw a few more chips just advice.

Besides a player's betting patterns, I think you should take into consideration where they are seated at the table. For instance, if everyone folds to the button, and he raises it substantially, it usually implies he's trying to stick it to the blinds and steal the pot. Even if they have a decent hand, it's much harder to call than make a bet, especially when out of position.

Along with that, try to figure out if they are tight or loose. If a tight person suddenly wants to bet it is a good sign to get out of the way, while a loose player is nothing to get too worried about.

Are you using a HUD?

I agree with you! It is a good indication about the type of player and can help most of the time... But good players normally change their style during the tournaments and using false indications of weakness and/or strength depending on the position or type of opponents and it can create a confusion mainly when you play against smart players and with a large range of hands...
