Teach me to fold an overpair...

This is definately the biggest leak in my game. So many times i'll get 3 bet preflop w/ JJ/QQ and a flop of unders will fall. Preflop i tell myself "he's obviously serious about this hand, maybe i'll flop a set and stack him here." Then the flop comes 269 and there is my meager JJ facing another aggressive bet. Now i tell myself "he has to have AA/KK, i know it...... But maybe he's just c-betting AK. **** it i'll see"<<<-- worst attitude in the world, i know. But curiousoty seems to constantly be killing the cat, and i find myself so often married to these hands and stacking everyone around me.

I've just been running like trash the past few days, and i feel like this contributes even more to me overvaluing these types of hands. Also i know it's just variance/cold decks and it will pass, but me pissing away buy-ins with this play won't pass and i need to tackle it now. Any advice is welcome, but i know this is something i just need to learn more dicipline to control. Again i'm ranting, but i figure it's better to be bitching on here than tilting away money on full tilt.

Sounds like you just need to trust yourself and your reads a little more to me. You will never be able to get away from hands like these until you do

Post some hand histories. Without them it's hard to say whether you're getting yourself into situations where you should be able to get away from an overpair or whether you're just running bad and being results-oriented.

It can't be taught. You have to be born prepared to fold an overpair. Nature vs. nurture kinda thing.

Uhh, you can definitely be taught to fold an overpair. When I first started I thought an overpair to the board was the complete nuts, now I've read books and forums and such and I can easily fold an overpair in the right spots.

you said you got 3 bet, calling won't give you much info on what he's holding, a reraise pre flop might take it there or help put him on a hand. pocket pairs have a 9% chance of making trips after the flop & 5% after the turn, a low flop after a reraise should tell you that he missed the flop or has a pocket pair also, again you have to bet on the flop, 1/2 to pot raise, to see what he is holding. if your in position and he bets first, a reraise is needed to let him know he's beat. if he calls this, you might then consider checking or folding later. Also the texture of the flop is important, if there is a Flush or str draw, you need to take it down quick, and if the scare card comes not be afraid to bet and fold a reraise. many times your bet takes it if he missed. remember betting gathers info. checking doesnt give much, but doesn't receive any either. save that checking move for when you have the nuts, or totally missed and not holding anyhting that would improve your hand for a win.

Your post doesn't give enough info. What kind of player are you? TAg? LAg? Do you only raise with premium hands? How are you playing these flops? Just saying you want to see what they have isn't enough. Are you raising their bets or just calling?

Recognizing sets is very hard to do but it can be learned. And, yes, you won't always be facing a set and will be folding a winner. A lot just depends on your style, the table image you have, and using your chips to gain info.
