Talking About RANGES

Thinking about hand ranges would help a poker players game exponentially.

So what are ranges?
-I simply define it as a set of hands a hero or villain may play in certain situations.

Lets elaborate:
what are these situations?
1. Pre-flop raising
2. 3-betting
3. flat calling
4. c-betting
5. and many more

you can start by thinking about your own hand ranges, so what range of hands do you play pre-flop depending on position?what range do you 3-bet with? etc.

once you start thinking about your own range, thinking about hand ranges of your opponent will follow.

What are the benefits on thinking about ranges?
1. hand analysis becomes easy > instead of pin pointing a certain hand of your opponent you can think about the range of hands they are playing in a situation and come up with a better guess

2. decision becomes easy > when you decide based on what your opponent may have it is a very tiring decision to think hand by hand but if you decide base on their hand ranges the decision becomes easy and much more precise

3. you make less mistakes > it is because if you specifically assign a hand to a villain there is a much bigger change that your guess is wrong thus you will make more mistakes compared to decisions you make when you base it on a range.

I play and bet all hands differently based on position who's limped raised and as I get to know my opponents say I have a tight person that raised and I have AA I would just call and see a flop if it was against someone that would raise with anything down to 4 5 suited then I'm gonna go over the top and prolly 4 bet so I don't get sucked out on. So elaborate your post a little more

I play $1/2 presently with my bankroll at Foxwoods. I mainly play on Saturday's and sometimes on a Sunday, I also make a couple of trips a year to the poker room. With being at the tables on a somewhat regular basis I do at times play against players I have played against before, but.. what is the best way to figure out in my head all players poker hand ranges as the hand progresses..
For me, it is trying to put the player not on a specific hand but are they playing small pair, suited connectors, connected cards pre-flop. I know once the flop comes out , then their bets could indicate what they have.

I read this great article a while back that talked about Poker ranges and the steps of growth in Poker.

Step 1: Poker player only plays their cards, ABC style. AA/KK/AK/QQs etc.

Step 2: What does my Opponent have?

Step 3: What does my Opponent think I have?

Thinking in ranges definitely helps you pinpoint what your opponents have and drastically improves your poker game. If you come against a tight player who 3bets in middle position, you can assume his range is pretty capped and he's repping Qs plus usually.

I'm sure you guys have also heard the term of "Range polarization".
